Faculty of History

1. OVERVIEW

The Faculty of History was one of the first faculties of Hanoi General University established by the Decree No. 2138/TC of the Government on June 6th, 1956. Since 1995, the Faculty became one of faculties of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University-Hanoi and it has been maintaining as the leading center of interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary training and research with high quality nation-wide and as the prestigious faculty for both Vietnamese and internationals.

Seven thousand students have been pursuing their studies in both undergraduate and graduate programs at the Faculty of History, of which more than one hundred have successfully completed their PhD programs and more than two hundred have accomplished their master programs.

Graduates from the Faculty of History have been working in various areas and fields nation-wide serving the national defense and construction. Many of them became historians and culture researchers. A number of them became successful administrators, political and social activists and some of them died for the national independence and freedom such as Mr. Ca Le Hien, also known as Le Anh Xuan, and Mr. Ngo Van So.

The Faculty has been awarded many honor titles such as:

  • The First Rank Labor Decoration
  • The Third Rank Labor Decoration
  • The Title of Labor Hero (in 2000)

Due to their great achievements in training and research, many professors and lecturers have been awared many honor titles such as the first rank, the second and the third rank medals; many certificates of merits from Vietnam Conferderation of Labor, from Vietnam National University. More than 50 faculty were awarded medals for National Education Cause, medals for Science and Technology Cause, and so on.

4. RESEARCH PROGRAMS

The Faulty has been focusing on the following areas of research:

  • Process of Vietnam Territory and Culture
  • Vietnam and Sea Sovereignty and Exploitation
  • Vietnam’s Enthic Groups and Cultures
  • Cultural Contacts Exchange between Vietnam and other regions, civilizations in history:
  • between regions, ethnic groups and communities in Vietnam during the history;
  • between Vietnam and China, Indochina, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Russia, Norhteast Asia, Western Europe and USA;
  • Features of Vietnam Historical and Cultural Evolution and Development;
  • Rural Development Studies in feudal dynasties, French Colonial period, and Contemporary.
  • Urbanization and Sustainable Development: Urbanization-related issues such as the formation and development of urban culture and management in Vietnam;
  • Area Studies: the process of formation and features of socio-eco-cultural regions.

5. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

The Faculty has been receiving hundreds of international scholars to conduct researches and cooperate in research projects from many countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Korea, Japan, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Holland, France, Germany, Italia, Norway, the United States and Canada.

Many international students from Korea, Singapore, the United States, Netherlands, Italia, France, Germany, Norway, Canada and other countries have come to the Faculty to do their internships, to conduct researches, to improve their expertise and pursue their studies and several of them have successfully complete their master and doctoral programs.
