University rankings – an inevitable trend in affirming VNU-USSH's position on the international academic map.

Among the various forms of benchmarking and evaluating the quality of higher education institutions, university rankings are playing an increasingly important role. This is not only a mechanism for social accountability within the quality assurance system, but also a way to affirm a university's position on the global education map. In the context of the rapidly changing global higher education landscape, participation in international rankings is no longer just a matter for a few large universities, but has become an inevitable trend for higher education institutions aiming for development, integration, and enhanced academic prestige.

As of 2022, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi) has participated in and been ranked in numerous world university rankings, such as the QS World University Rankings, QS Asia University Rankings, and QS World University Ranking by Subject, as well as rankings by Times Higher Education such as the THE World University Rankings, THE Asia University Rankings, and THE Impact Rankings. This demonstrates VNU-Hanoi's gradual presence in prestigious evaluation systems, while also highlighting the need to continue improving quality, standardizing data, and leveraging the strengths of its member units to enhance its position in the region and globally.

For the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, university rankings are directly linked to the goal of spreading brand awareness, strengthening image, and increasing influence and social responsibility in the field of social sciences and humanities. Through ranking, the University gains a basis to consolidate its academic position, expand connections with the academic community and employers, and promote the participation of stakeholders in the overall development of VNU-USSH.

The goal of ranking is not only to improve indicators, but also to build a sustainable development ecosystem in which the quality of training, scientific research, academic networks, employer connections, and social responsibility are closely intertwined. As the position of the social sciences and humanities is strengthened, the ranking of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) and its affiliated units on world university rankings will also have a solid foundation for improvement.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Thanh Nam - Permanent Vice Rector, delivered a speech at the training session.

According to the roadmap of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the goal is to have two more fields, Political Science and International Studies, included in the university rankings by 2030, while continuing to maintain the rankings of Sociology and Linguistics. By 2035, the University aims to have two more fields, History and Philosophy, included in the rankings. These are specific goals, reflecting the University's focused development orientation in enhancing the academic standing of the social sciences and humanities.

Sustainable development of training, research, and the potential recognized worldwide.

Ultimately, university rankings are inseparable from the quality culture of a higher education institution. For the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, participating in and improving its position in international rankings should be seen as a process of promoting quality from within: from identifying strengths, standardizing data processes, enhancing the quality of training and research, to expanding academic connections and strengthening the participation of partners.

From 2024 and 2025, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities participated in the QS World University Ranking by Subject, ranking universities by subject group and subject. The results show that the University has achieved recognition in several international rankings. Specifically, Sociology is ranked 301-375 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2025; Linguistics is ranked 251-300 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026; Social Sciences & Management is ranked 353 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026; and Social Sciences is ranked 801-1000 globally in the THE World University Rankings 2026.

These results are of significant importance to the University. First, they represent recognition of VNU-USSH's social sciences and humanities fields within international ranking systems. Simultaneously, they provide a basis for the University to better identify its strengths, areas for improvement, and future ranking potential in other fields. Therefore, the training content not only provides information on ranking methodologies but also aims to help training units specifically identify their position, enabling them to proactively prepare data and implement necessary activities.

Associate Professor Dr. Nghiem Xuan Huy - Director of the Institute of Digital Training and Testing, guided and shared experiences in university ranking.

According to Associate Professor Nghiêm Xuân Huy, with many disciplines and training programs in the social sciences and humanities, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, has great potential to achieve high rankings in many fields. This potential needs to be developed through standardization, data management, connecting scholars, connecting employers, and increasing academic activities that can contribute to the overall reputation of the University. Organizing training for leaders of training units, heads of functional departments, quality assurance assistants, and staff in charge of university ranking demonstrates the University's systematic preparation for this goal.

The training program to enhance the capacity for implementing university rankings is therefore of practical significance in the current period. This is an opportunity for units throughout the University to update their understanding, unify their approach, better understand the rankings, ranking methods, data preparation requirements, and the ability of social sciences and humanities fields to participate in the ranking process.

Building upon the achievements already made, and with a specific roadmap to 2030 and 2035, the university continues to affirm its development orientation linked to a culture of quality, improving the quality of training and research, expanding academic connections, and strengthening social responsibility. This is also an important foundation for the university to consolidate its position domestically and internationally, contributing to the goal of improving the ranking of Hanoi National University on the regional and global higher education map.

The training program received attention and discussion from leaders of training units, heads of functional departments, quality assurance assistants, and officers in charge of university ranking work from these units.
