Friday - November 14, 2025 01:01
(GD&TĐ) The forum 'Training and research in Social Sciences and Humanities in the new context' took place in Hanoi on November 14, 2025.
The forum was organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi). In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - acknowledged that science and education are facing many new development contexts. In that flow, social sciences and humanities - with their unique nature and important role in intellectual life - also face many opportunities and challenges.
According to Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan, based on summarizing the development journey and placing it in the general context of domestic science and education as well as the major trend of world higher education, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has implemented many activities to evaluate and survey objectively and frankly the achievements that have been achieved.
More importantly, the goal is to identify the current situation and trends to establish appropriate orientations in the new period. These orientations are not only for the School as a training and research facility, but also expected to contribute to the development of the social sciences and humanities in the country.
Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities delivered the opening speech of the Forum
Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan affirmed that the School is well aware of its role in human resource training, scientific research, policy consulting, community service and knowledge creation and dissemination to make practical contributions to the overall development of the country.
Sharing at the forum, Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son - Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - emphasized that the Forum will be an important basis to help determine the development orientation for training and research, contributing to the general development of the field of social sciences and humanities in the new context.
Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son said that over the past three decades, the field of social sciences and humanities has undergone many important changes associated with the development of higher education and the country.
First of all, there is a change in training philosophy. If the period 1956-1995 was marked by the foundation of academic training, the establishment of the "Hanoi General School", then from the late 1980s-1990s, along with the renovation and the formation of Hanoi National University, the training philosophy has changed dramatically.
Modern ideas such as “learner-centered” or “liberal education” have become the foundation for the expansion and diversification of training programs since 1995.
In the current context, when the role of social sciences and humanities is increasingly valued, the School continues to develop a modern, liberal training perspective, based on the basic scientific foundation built from the early days.
Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Hong Son - Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities shared at the Forum.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son, another important highlight is the development in scale and structure of the industry. If in 1994, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities had 8 faculties and 10 training majors, then by 2009 it had increased to 15 faculties and 20 majors. By 2025, the number of training units will remain at 15, but the university training sector has expanded to 30 majors.
This development shows the trend of shifting from the model of “one faculty – one industry” to “multi-industry”, associated with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary. At the postgraduate level, the training scale has also expanded strongly. Currently, the school has 30 bachelor’s majors, 32 master’s majors and 22 doctoral majors (streamlined from more than 30 previous majors towards integrating in-depth majors).
He affirmed that the figures and development practices over the past 30 years show that social sciences and humanities not only play an important role but also continuously adapt to the new context of the country and the world.
Experts and scientists participating in the Forum.
The forum focused on assessing the current status, achievements and prospects in training and research for each industry; the role and importance of the industry in modern society, and at the same time identifying the characteristics, strengths, achievements, training and research results of the industry at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The application of new technology, digital transformation and artificial intelligence in teaching and research activities; as well as international experience and lessons for training and research in the industry in Vietnam were also issues of focus.
