Meeting with the delegation from University of Passau (Germany)

On September 9th,2017, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (USSH’s Rector) and representatives of the Office for Cooperation and Development welcomed a delegation from University of Passau (Germany) led by Prof. Martin Grossheim (Department of Southeast Asian Studies) and Mrs. Ngo Thi Bich Thu (Head of Department of Vietnamese Language).

The delegation of University of Passau also included 17 students from its Faculty of Economics and Cultural Studies. These students visited USSH to study Vietnamese language and Vietnamese history, culture and society at the Faculty of Vietnamese language and studies; participate in exchanges and dialogues with USSH' students as well as those of other universities in Vietnam; and visit the well-known provinces and locations in Vietnam such as Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City. The delegation planned to stay in Vietnam until October 5th before returning to Germany. However, some students would continue to remain at USSH’s Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Language to study Vietnamese language for a period of 3 weeks - 3 months.

At the meeting, on behalf of USSH, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh expressed his gratefulness for welcoming the students of University of Passau. The Rector emphasized that USSH was implementing the strategy of internationalizing its research and training activities. Therefore, the presence of foreign professors, scholars and students contributes to expanding its international relations. The Rector briefly introduced about USSH’s history, training programs and major achievements up to date; with an emphasis on its long-standing relations with German partners such as the Heinrich Heine Düsseldorf University, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and Dao Minh Quang Foundation. The Rector also spent some time answering questions from the German students about the differences between Vietnamese and German languages ​​and cultures, the Vietnamese education system, the advantages and disadvantages faced by foreign students when studying and doing research in Vietnam, etc.

The University of Passau opened on 9 October 1978 with a total enrolment figure of 463 students in its first semester. It has four faculties: Law, Business Administration and Economics, Arts and Humanities, and Computer Science and Mathematics. Some 12,000 students hailing from 100 countries and more than 1,000 staff in primary employment in the academic units and academic support divisions are engaged in research, teaching and higher education support functions there.
