In October 1945, President Ho Chi Minh signed the decree to establish Hanoi University of Arts – the precursor of the current VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi. In April 1956, University of Hanoi was established. During this period, fundamental foundation for the disciplines of social sciences and humanities as well as the university’s tradition and reputation were laid.

In September 1995, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was established on the basis of the disciplines of social sciences and humanities from University of Hanoi, and became an official member of Vietnam National University, Hanoi - the country’s leading comprehensive and most prestigious training and research center.

It can be said that USSH today is the continuation of the University of Literature, Hanoi University, and Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Its aim is to become an advanced research university, with the mission of "taking the lead in training high-quality human resources, and creating and disseminating knowledge of social sciences and humanities". 
In 75 years of development, USSH has always been considered by the Party and State of Vietnam to be the country's biggest center for training and studying social sciences and humanities, tasked with producing a force of qualified staff specialized in the fundamental sciences and contribute to national development and defense.
Integrity and entrepreneurship, standardization and creativity are the core traditional values ​​of the University always preserved and promoted by generations of its staff and students.

In 2005, on the 60th anniversary of its tradition, the University was  awarded the Title of Labor Hero by the Vietnamese President. 

In 2010, celebrating 65 years of tradition, the University was the Medal of Ho Chi Minh by the Vietnamese President.

In 2015, celebrating 70 years of tradition and 20 years of establishment of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, recognizing the contributions by the University to training human resources and science-technology development in the period 2009-2014, the Vietnamese President awarded the University the Labor Medal of the First Order. 

Over 75 years of development, despite countless difficulties, thanks to its cohesion and entrepreneurship, the University has become more and more developed, striving to become an advanced research university in the region and the world. 

University of Social Sciences and Humanities currently has 15 faculties; 1 division; 9 functional offices; 01 school; 01 research institute; 10 training and research centers; 01 company; 01 Museum; 01 Journal; 01 High School for Gifted Students in Social Sciences and Humanities. The University has 520 staff members: 70% of whom are Doctors, 28% are Professors/Assoc.professors. USSH's administrative system is being perfected through modernization and integration.

STATISTICS

On October 10, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh signed Decree No. 45 / SL to establish the University of Literature in Hanoi.
On June 4, 1956, the Vietnamese Prime Minister issued Decision No. 2183/CP to establish Hanoi General University.
In 1957, President Ho Chi Minh visited the University's staff and students.
1956-1995 was a period of strong development of the University as the leading center of fundamental sciences in Vietnam, effectively serving the cause of national development and defense.
In September 1995, University of Social Sciences and Humanities was officially established, becoming an independent unit within Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The first Rector of the University is Prof. Dr. Phung Huu Phu (Former Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice Rector of Hanoi General University).
In 2005, on the 60th anniversary of its tradition, the University was honored to receive the Title of Labor Hero by the Vietnamese President

In 2015, on the 70th anniversary of tradition and 20th anniversary of establishment of USSH, recognizing the contributions by the University to training human resources and science-technology for Vietnam in the period 2009-2014, the President awarded the Labor Medal of First Order to USSH. 
  • Training ~ 12,000 undergraduate students, master's candidates and doctoral candidates
  • 32 bachelor's programs, 44 master's programs and 31 doctoral programs
  • Signed over 400 MOUs with universities, research institutes, foundations and international organizations around the world. Many partners are highly-ranking universities in the region and the world. 
  • Each year more than 300 international students enroll in international training programs through (2 + 2) and (3 + 1) mechanisms
  • Over the past 5 years, the University has invited more than 170 foreign experts to teach and do research at it 
  • Over the past 5 years, USSH has facilitated 500 trips for its staff to study, teach, participate in exchanges and establish partnerships at advanced universities in the United States, France, Germany, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
  • Over the past 5 years, the University has held 170 conferences and seminars of all kinds, including 100 international conferences.
  • Over the past 5 years, the University' staff have published 1895 articles in specialized magazines in Vietnam, 78 monographs in Vietnamese, and 07 books in foreign languages.
  • Over the past 5 years, the University' staff have published a total of 443 international publications in different languages, of which 336 articles published in indexed journals and by indexed publishers, in particular, 107 articles published in journals and by publishers listed in the ISI/SCOPUS database
  • Over the past 5 years, the University has chaired 22 state-level projects, 13 projects under the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development, 70 projects at the VNU level and 94 subjects at the University level.
