The School of Journalism and Communication (SJC - USSH, VNU Hanoi) is one of the two leading institutions that study and train journalism and communication in Vietnam.

It has been one-fourth century since journalism was introduced into a leading university of social sciences and humanities in Vietnam. After 30 years of creation and development, SJC has gradually validated its reputation of training human resources for the country.

By studying and working at the leading university of social sciences and humanities in Vietnam, SJC's students are provided with basic, fundamental and profound knowledge of important media aspects, helping the potential journalists to gain comprehensive social understanding and solid professional skills. Currently, SJC also has the most modern and unified facilities in Vietnam. Thousands of bachelors, masters and doctors have been produced, who have joined and made notable contributions to the community of journalists and media practitioners nationwide.

Currently, SJC offers two majors: Journalism and Public Relations at bachelor's, master's and doctorate levels. The School is also one the first institutions in Vietnam collaborating with Stirling University (UK) to organize the Master's program in Communication Management, the first institution that offers the Research-based Master's program in Journalism (since 1997) and Applied Master's program in Journalism (since 2017) and in the future will continue to develop Master's programs in Business Communication, Journalism and Communicatoin Management and Business.

History

  • 1990: The Ministry of Education and Training approved the creation of Faculty of Journalism at Hanoi General University.

  • 1991: On October 12th, 1991, the first Journalism course was launched with 160 students.

  • 1997: The Ministry of Education and Training tasked USSH with the postgraduate program in Journalism, which started to admit students in 1997.

  • 2005: VNU, Hanoi tasked the Faculty of Journalism with training Doctors of Journalism, officially admitting students in 2007.

  • 2008: Faculty of Journalism changed its name to Faculty of Journalism and Communication.

  • 2012: VNU, Hanoi was tasked with the bachelor's program in Public Relations at USSH. The Faculty of Journalism and Communication was the only faculty in Vietnam that trained two majors: Journalism and Public relations.

  • 2014: VNU, Hanoi was allowed to launch the Master's program in Communication Management at USSH in collaboration with Stirling University (UK), whose degrees are provided by Stirling University.

  • 2017: VNU, Hanoi tasked USSH with the Applied Master's Program in Journalism.

  • 2018: On July 18th, 2018, the School of Journalism and Communication was officially founded by combining the resources of Faculty of Journalism and Communication with the Center for Media Practice.

Prominent achivements

Since 1990, the School has trained over 10,000 bachelors, over 700 masters and doctors, effectively providing for Vietnam's journalism and media industry. The annual number of SJC's students finding jobs after graduation is over 80%. Over 100 of its alumni have scored journalism awards at different levels. Many of its alumni hold important positions at local and central press agencies. SJC has successfully conducted many research projects and programs at Sectoral, Ministry and State levels, held many international conferences and launched important common projects.

The School of Journalism and Communication will continue to promote its internal and collective strength, help its staff and lecturers make in-depth improvements, upgrade its training and research quality, develop highly-skilled staff, and perfect its textbooks and curriculla with a new vision in order to be successful in the coming time.
