Mission and development goals of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities

1. Mission

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, has the mission of being a leader in training high-quality, highly skilled human resources; researching, creating, and disseminating knowledge in social sciences and humanities, serving the cause of national construction and defense and international integration.

Leveraging the strengths of a university specializing in basic sciences, the focus will be on developing the University of Social Sciences and Humanities into a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research university with a team of leading experts; developing several new and pioneering training programs and specializations that play a core role in training and research in the basic sciences of the country, reaching regional and international standards; and ranking among the top 100 universities in Asia and the top 500 universities in the world.

II. Strategic Objectives

1. General Objectives

Developing the University of Social Sciences and Humanities towards a research-oriented university, continuing to affirm its leading position in research and training in social sciences and humanities in Vietnam, striving to be among the top 150 universities in Asia by 2025, among the top 100 universities in the continent by 2035, and on par with advanced universities (among the top 500) in the world.

2. Specific Objectives

Training high-quality, highly skilled human resources to serve the cause of industrialization, modernization, and international integration.

- To create favorable conditions for unleashing creative potential, critical thinking, and entrepreneurial spirit; to build an open, friendly, and cohesive academic environment… so that intellectuals, learners, and society can participate in the development of the University and contribute to building a learning society.[1].

- Each academic year, the faculties, departments, centers, and research institutes of the University invite at least one expert from prestigious foreign universities to teach and exchange scientific knowledge. The number of international experts invited will increase in the following years.

- Implement the development of training programs and specializations approved by Hanoi National University, continue to refine existing training programs towards interdisciplinary connections, continue to expand high-quality training programs towards socialization, and propose the development of new advanced interdisciplinary training programs; expand international training partnerships with prestigious universities in the region and the world.

- Focus on training high-quality human resources at all three university levels: Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees. Increase the proportion of postgraduate training, especially doctoral training. By 2025, ensure that the proportion of postgraduate training reaches 20% of the number of regular students.

The training scale is projected to reach 7,800 full-time university students and 300 gifted high school students by 2025. Within the full-time university program, 2% of students will be international students.

By 2025, approximately 10% of graduates in fields such as Oriental Studies, International Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, Tourism, etc., will possess the professional skills and foreign language proficiency to successfully participate in the labor market of the ASEAN Economic Community.

- The school considers maintaining and continuously improving the quality of training, and training a team of highly qualified scientific staff with a high level of autonomy and creativity in teaching and scientific research, as a central task and a "strategic solution".[2]in the long-term development plan.

High-quality scientific research serves the cause of building, developing, and protecting the Fatherland.

- Identify several priority research directions that leverage the university's strengths and are closely linked to Vietnam's development needs regarding its historical, cultural, and social traditions; its unique development model and path; Vietnam's role and position in regional and international relations; and national sovereignty and security, with a focus on research concerning borders, maritime territories, territorial processes, etc.

- Establish and develop at least two key laboratories/research centers at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi level; the Institute of Policy and Management, and the Social Assessment Experimental Laboratory to serve research on ethics, lifestyles, and social issues.

- Planning and building a team of leading experts, ensuring that each key research area has one strong research group and/or a potential research group at the VNU level.

- Further promote international publications to ensure that the total number of international publications of VNU reaches 10%.

Developing resources and implementing a culture of quality.

- Implementing the motto: "People are at the center of the development strategy and are also the subjects of development."[3]The university has strong mechanisms and solutions in place for training staff, especially for training a team of skilled experts and leading scientists in the university's scientific fields.

- Increase the faculty-to-staff ratio to ensure sufficient resources for task implementation and to meet the requirements of expanding training scale and organizational structure of some units.

- Prioritize investment to improve the quality of the faculty, meeting the requirements of training and scientific research in the context of deep integration and the development orientation of a research university that is autonomous, innovative, connected, and entrepreneurial.

- The university's faculty and staff are highly capable, creative thinkers in teaching and research; they possess a firm grasp of advanced methods, perspectives, and approaches in teaching and research. The university's lecturers are not only highly competent in their professional fields but also proficient in foreign languages, enabling them to participate in teaching programs, academic exchanges, collaborative research, and international scientific dialogue.

- Establish mechanisms to attract highly qualified and skilled experts to work at the university; leverage resources, training programs, and cooperation projects to attract international experts and scientists to give guest lectures, present scientific papers, attend conferences, and conduct research.

- Continue to develop financial resources, effectively utilize funds allocated by the State, and at the same time diversify financial resources, attracting funding from training programs, research cooperation, and development projects with partners and scientific institutions both domestically and internationally.

- Strengthening a culture of quality, from progress to efficiency, in all areas of the University's operations; professionalizing management, training, and research activities; building a community spirit, sharing responsibility in solving common problems for the development of the University. Prioritizing quality in line with strategy and objectives; moving towards achieving university quality accreditation according to the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) standards; and ensuring that 100% of undergraduate programs and 30% of master's programs are accredited and evaluated according to domestic and international standards.
