President Ho Chi Minh signed Decree 45/SL deciding to establish the Faculty of Literature within the structure of the Vietnam National University.
June 4, 1956
The government issued Decision No. 2184/TC establishing 5 universities and 15 vocational high schools, including Hanoi University.

The government issued Decree 97/CP deciding to establish the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, based on the reorganization of three major universities in Hanoi: Hanoi University of General Sciences, Hanoi Pedagogical University 1, and Hanoi University of Foreign Languages Education.
September 5, 1994
The Prime Minister signed Decision No. 477/QD-TTg on the promulgation of the Regulations on Organization and Operation of Hanoi National University.

The 32nd Conference of the Party Committee of Hanoi University issued a special announcement containing two points:
+ The issue of establishing two universities, the University of Natural Sciences and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, on the basis of Hanoi University.
+ Issues related to preparations for the 40th anniversary of the founding of Hanoi University.
August 16, 1995
The Minister of Education and Training issued a decision appointing Associate Professor Dr. Phung Huu Phu as Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi for the term 1995-1999. The Vice Rectors for this term were Professor Dr. Nguyen Minh Thuyet, Dr. Pham Xuan Hang, and in 1996, Dr. Pham Quang Long was added.

The member universities of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, including the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, have officially begun operating independently.

The Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, issued a decision to establish three new faculties: the Faculty of International Studies, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, and the Faculty of Tourism Studies. Also in 1995, the Faculty of Vietnamese Language was renamed the Faculty of Vietnamese Language and Culture for Foreigners.
International students study at the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language. The Faculty is a leading research and training institution in Vietnam with a rich tradition in Vietnamese studies.

The Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi issued Decision No. 449/TCCB establishing two departments within the University of Social Sciences and Humanities: the Department of Political Science and the Department of Foreign Languages.
December 28, 1995
The Hanoi City Party Committee issued a decision to establish the Party Committee of the University of Natural Sciences and the Party Committee of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and appointed provisional Party Committees for the two new Party Committees. The provisional Executive Committee of the Party Committee of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was appointed, consisting of 9 members, with Associate Professor Dr. Phung Huu Phu, the Rector, as the Party Committee Secretary. Subsequently, mass organizations such as the Trade Union and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union were also established.

The first Party Congress of the University, which was the 22nd according to the tradition of the Party Committee of Hanoi University (June 1996-1998).

The university has added three new faculties: the Faculty of Archival Studies, established on the basis of the Historical Archival Department of the Faculty of History (December 1997), renamed the Faculty of Archival Studies and Office Management; and the Faculty of Linguistics, established on the basis of the Linguistics major of the Faculty of Literature, and simultaneously renamed the Faculty of Literature. The Department of Information and Library Science was re-established and became a department directly under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, issued a decision to separate the Faculty of Sociology and Psychology into two faculties: the Faculty of Sociology and the Faculty of Psychology.
