1. Formation and Development Process

The predecessor of the Trade Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was the Trade Union of Hanoi University. Along with the establishment of the Party Committee of Hanoi University, the Trade Union of Hanoi University was established in July 1958. The first provisional Executive Committee of the Trade Union was appointed by the Party Committee, with Comrade Pho Duc To (a staff member of the Faculty of Mathematics) as the Chief Secretary. He was the first Chairman of the Trade Union of Hanoi University.
On December 10, 1993, the Prime Minister signed Decree No. 97/CP establishing the Vietnam National University, Hanoi. In this Decree, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the University of Natural Sciences were separated from the former Hanoi University.
On March 26, 1996, the Hanoi City Federation of Labor issued Decision No. 231/QD-TC establishing the grassroots trade union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the grassroots trade union of the University of Natural Sciences. In the 1995-1996 academic year, the Trade Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities officially became an independent trade union within a new organizational system – the Trade Union of Hanoi National University, with Comrade Do Quang Hung as its first chairman.
The Trade Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was established as a continuation and development of the traditions of the Trade Union of Hanoi University; it is a continuation of generations of leaders with solid professional qualifications and management skills, full of enthusiasm, frankness, courage to think and act, always listening, sharing, and always accompanying the staff and employees of the University.
From its early days, the University's Trade Union has made significant contributions to maintaining stability and development; building a humane educational environment, and fostering a spirit of solidarity among union members and union organizations throughout the University.
In response to the demands of innovation and integration, the University's Trade Union has continuously innovated and created new content and methods of operation; activities have become increasingly in-depth, relevant to practical realities and target groups, and have the power to attract and persuade union members; through these activities, it has mobilized and encouraged staff and employees to actively contribute their efforts and intellect to the cause of building and developing the University into a stronger institution, successfully fulfilling both professional and political tasks in the new context.
The Trade Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is one of the most active units in coordinating and implementing many meaningful activities within the cluster of five major universities' trade unions in Hanoi: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi National Economics University, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, University of Natural Sciences, and University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

2. Functions and responsibilities:

- To disseminate information and mobilize union members and workers to implement the Party's guidelines and policies; the State's laws and regulations; citizens' obligations; and the Trade Union's policies and resolutions.

- To represent, care for, and protect the legitimate rights and interests of union members and workers in accordance with the laws of the State.

- Monitoring or participating in monitoring the implementation of policies, laws, regulations, rules, collective labor agreements, and issues related to the legitimate rights and interests of union members and workers as prescribed by law.

- Coordinate with the School Board to develop and implement democratic regulations at the grassroots level; care for the material and spiritual well-being, improve professional skills and qualifications, enhance working conditions, and provide healthcare for staff and employees; organize emulation movements and cultural and social activities.

Implementing resolutions of trade unions at all levels, adhering to the Charter of the Vietnam Trade Union; organizing training and development for union members and officials; managing and utilizing trade union finances and assets in accordance with regulations; carrying out membership development and management; building strong grassroots trade unions; participating in building harmonious, stable, and progressive labor relations in the workplace; building sustainable development for agencies, units, and enterprises; participating in building a clean and strong Party and people's government.

4. Achievements

After a quarter century of operation, spanning 10 congress terms as a member unit of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi Trade Union, the Trade Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has affirmed its position within the Vietnam National University, Hanoi Trade Union, the Vietnam Education Trade Union, and the Hanoi City Federation of Labor.
Along with the development of the University, the Trade Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has continuously grown stronger with over 500 union members operating in 19 departmental unions. The University's trade union has consistently achieved the title of outstandingly strong grassroots trade union and has been recognized with prestigious awards from the State and trade union organizations at all levels.
