Scientific seminar: 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Do Duc Hieu.

Professor and Distinguished Educator Do Duc Hieu was born on September 16, 1924, in Co Nhue commune, Tu Liem district, Hanoi. At Hanoi University, he belonged to the second generation of scholars who contributed to the development of the Literature department, following the generation of scholars such as Dang Thai Mai, Hoai Thanh, Cao Xuan Huy, Nguyen Manh Tuong, Hoang Xuan Nhi, and others.
Professor Do Duc Hieu is one of the literary researchers highly regarded by experts, leaving behind thousands of pages of writings, including textbooks, research, and translations, laying the groundwork for the modernization of literary criticism during the Doi Moi (Renovation) period. He was the chief editor of the two-volume Dictionary of Literature in 1984, authoring 67 entries; he co-edited with colleagues the ten-volume textbook on the History of French Literature from antiquity to the present; he translated many works by prominent French literary authors such as Molière's Tartuffe, *The Miser*, *The Miser* (17th century), Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's *Paul and Virginie* (18th century), V. Hugo's play *Marion Delorme* and novel *Les Misérables* (19th century)...; in the bilingual anthology of French literary works, he edited and translated most of Volume II (17th century).
Between 1992 and 2002, Professor Do Duc Hieu devoted himself to writing three works on reforming the way of reading and literary criticism: Reforming Literary Criticism (1993), Reforming Reading and Literary Criticism (1999), and Modern Poetics (2000). As a leading expert on Western literature, Professor Do Duc Hieu is also the author of numerous insightful and profound writings on Vietnamese literature with a fresh approach to poetics: on the poetry of Ho Xuan Huong, on The Tale of Kieu, on the poetry of Nguyen Nhuoc Phap and Luu Trong Lu, and the works of Vu Trong Phung, Nam Cao, The Lu, etc.
2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Do Duc Hieu. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is organizing a scientific seminar to commemorate this event, aiming to remember, appreciate, and honor the Professor's contributions to education and scientific research.
