The predecessor institution of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, was the Faculty of Literature, Hanoi (established by decree).
Number 45 (signed by President Ho Chi Minh on October 10, 1945), followed by Hanoi University (established on June 5, 1956). On December 10, 1993, the Prime Minister
Decree 97/CP was issued to establish the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, which includes the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, established on the basis of its faculties.

Over more than 70 years of construction and development, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has consistently played a leading role as a center for basic science research and training in the country, effectively serving the cause of national construction and defense. The University's achievements in training and scientific research have been recognized by the State with prestigious titles: the First-Class Labor Medal (1981), the First-Class Independence Medal (2001), the title of Hero of Labor in the Renovation Period (2005), the Ho Chi Minh Medal (2010); 10 teachers have been awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize, 16 teachers have been awarded the State Prize for science and technology, 25 teachers have been awarded the title of People's Teacher, and 56 teachers have been awarded the title of Excellent Teacher.
