PART I. GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE TRAINING PROGRAM

2. Objectives of the training program

2.1. General Objectives

The program aims to train highly qualified experts with independent and creative research capabilities in the field of Historical Sciences, focusing on five specialized areas (History of Historiography and Historiography; Archaeology; Vietnamese History; World History; and History of the Communist Party of Vietnam). Graduates will be able to master modern theories and interdisciplinary methodologies; possess sharp critical thinking skills to solve complex academic problems; and demonstrate leadership, knowledge dissemination, and policy advisory capabilities in the fields of history, culture, heritage, and international relations at educational institutions, research institutes, government agencies, and international organizations.

2.2. Specific Objectives

- Specific Objective 1 (O 01): To provide a pioneering, up-to-date, and in-depth knowledge system on multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research theories and methods. To enable doctoral students to decipher complex historical phenomena in five specialized directions, thereby developing the capacity to create new knowledge and contribute to the development of national and international historiography.

- Specific Objective 2 (O 02): To cultivate the capacity to creatively apply comprehensive knowledge to solve practical challenges of contemporary society. Focus on skills in designing, managing, and supervising large-scale research projects; skills in international scientific publication; and the ability to communicate and discuss high-level professional knowledge to connect the academic community with the public.

- Specific Objective 3 (O 03): To develop the character of an independent expert with high autonomy in implementing theoretical and applied research topics. To train policy consultants and cultural-historical managers with rigorous academic ethics, who respect differences and have a spirit of community service, meeting the standards for working in a globalized environment.

3. Admission Information

3.1. Admission methods

Admission is based on the evaluation of professional profiles in accordance with the regulations of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi).

3.2. Eligibility Criteria

3.2.1. Educational requirements

- Must have graduated with a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with a GPA of Excellent or higher in a relevant field, or have graduated with an equivalent level 7 qualification according to the Vietnamese National Qualifications Framework in certain specialized fields relevant to History. In cases where candidates are required to complete supplementary courses, these must be completed before a decision is made to recognize them as doctoral candidates.

- Diplomas issued by foreign educational institutions must undergo recognition procedures in accordance with the current regulations of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

3.2.2. Requirements regarding research competence and experience

- Meet the entry requirements according to the training program standards issued by the Ministry of Education and Training and of the doctoral training program for which you are applying.

- Candidates must demonstrate research experience through a master's thesis from a research-oriented training program. Specifically, candidates with an applied-oriented master's degree, or a master's degree in a relevant field but requiring supplementary studies, or candidates applying from a bachelor's degree program, must be the author or co-author of at least one scientific publication. Scientific publications can be articles in specialized scientific journals, book chapters, or scientific reports published in the proceedings of national or international peer-reviewed scientific conferences or seminars, with relevant ISBNs related to the research field or topic, and recognized by the Faculty Council of the relevant/interdisciplinary field.

- The research proposal must clearly state the proposed topic, research field; reasons for choosing the research field and topic; a brief overview of the research situation in that field domestically and internationally; research objectives; some key research contents; research methods and expected results; reasons for choosing the training institution; implementation plan during the training period; the candidate's experience, knowledge, understanding, and preparation for undertaking the doctoral dissertation.

- A letter of recommendation from at least one scientist holding the title of professor, associate professor, or a doctoral degree (PhD) who has collaborated professionally with the applicant and is knowledgeable in the field the applicant intends to research. The letter of recommendation must include comments and assessments of the applicant regarding:

+ Moral character, abilities and scientific research attitude, and professional qualifications of the applicant;

+ For scientists who meet the criteria for supervising doctoral students and agree to act as thesis supervisors, additional comments on the urgency and feasibility of the research topic and content should be included; and the ability to mobilize doctoral students for research topics and projects, as well as the available funding for the doctoral students' research activities (if any), should be clearly stated.

+ Other comments and levels of support and recommendations for the candidate to pursue doctoral studies.

3.2.3. Foreign language requirements

- Applicants who are Vietnamese citizens must meet the foreign language proficiency requirements (in one of the following languages: English, Russian, Chinese, French, or German) that align with the foreign language output standards of the training program, as evidenced by one of the following diplomas or certificates:

+ A university degree or higher awarded by a foreign educational institution, a branch of a foreign educational institution in Vietnam, or a Vietnamese educational institution to a full-time student in a foreign language;

+ A university degree in a foreign language or foreign language pedagogy awarded by a Vietnamese educational institution;

+ Possess a foreign language certificate equivalent to level 4 according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam, valid for 2 years from the date of the exam to the date of application, issued by institutions accepted by the Ministry of Education and Training and the Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

- Applicants who are foreign citizens and register for a doctoral program in history taught in Vietnamese must have a Vietnamese language certificate at least at level 4 or higher in the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework for Foreigners, or have graduated from a university (or equivalent qualification or higher) where the program is taught in Vietnamese and must meet the requirements for a second foreign language as stipulated by the program.

3.2.4. Other requirements

- Must have a clean personal record and not be currently serving a criminal sentence or subject to disciplinary action at the level of a warning or higher.

- I am healthy enough to study.

- Commitment to fulfilling financial obligations during the training process as stipulated by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

3.3. List of suitable industries

- Archaeology, History, History Education, History of the Communist Party of Vietnam, World History, Vietnamese History, History of the international communist, workers' and national liberation movements, Heritage Studies.

- The field of study is defined in the training program standards issued by the Ministry of Education and Training;

- For cases where there are no established training program standards for the corresponding field or group of disciplines, the specialized unit must have a scientific and practical basis, determined by the Scientific and Training Council of the specialized unit and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, to identify the discipline with the closest professional foundation to the training program and determine the corresponding supplementary courses (if needed); report to Hanoi National University before enrollment and be responsible for this professional evaluation.

3.4. Projected enrollment size

- According to the quotas granted annually by Vietnam National University, Hanoi (expected 10-15 doctoral candidates/year).

- The admission plan follows the regulations and guidelines for postgraduate admissions of VNU Hanoi each year, and the admission scheme of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities approved by VNU Hanoi (if any).

PART II. LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

1. Requirements regarding thesis quality

- The dissertation must be an independent scientific research work that makes a new contribution to solving a scientific, theoretical, or practical problem, contributing to the development and formation of a new theoretical framework or ideology suitable for the specialized field/research direction of History.

- The dissertation topic must be approved by the specialized subcommittee during the doctoral training admission process, and the head of the training unit must issue a decision assigning the topic and supervisor. The doctoral candidate must present the content and research plan to the specialized unit no later than 3 months after receiving the dissertation topic and report on the research results every 6 months during the dissertation period. The evaluation of the report is a condition for considering the proposal to defend the dissertation.

- The dissertation content is guaranteed and signed by the doctoral candidate.

- The dissertation structure must include at least the following sections: Introduction; Literature Review; Research Question; Theoretical Basis; Research Methods; Research Results and Analyses/Explanations; Conclusion; List of References cited and used in the dissertation as prescribed by the training institution; List of published works related to the dissertation topic of the doctoral candidate, along with written consent from co-authors (if any); Appendix (if any).

- Comply with intellectual property rights regulations as stipulated in the Intellectual Property Law.

- The dissertation must be written in Vietnamese, using Unicode characters, Time New Roman font, size 13, and no more than 300 pages (excluding appendices), with at least 50% of the pages presenting, analyzing, and explaining the research results of the doctoral candidate.

- The format and structure of the thesis comply with the regulations of Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

- The thesis abstract should accurately reflect the structure and content of the full thesis, and must include the complete conclusion. The thesis information sheet, approximately 3-5 pages in both Vietnamese and English, should summarize the main content, research results, and most important contributions of the thesis.

2. Research competency requirements

- The doctoral candidate publishes the research results of their dissertation in a specialized scientific journal as the main author (first name/corresponding author), with a total score of 2.0 points or more based on the maximum score stipulated by the State Council of Professors for each type of work (no point division when there are co-authors). International publications must be written in a foreign language; articles published in domestic specialized scientific journals included in the list stipulated by the State Council of Professors have a minimum evaluation score of 0.75 points and must meet one of the following criteria:

+ Have at least one article published in a scientific journal listed in the Web of Science or Scopus database (hereinafter referred to as WoS/Scopus database);

+ Possess at least one granted patent/utility model and at least one international article/report in one of the following publications: (i) a reference book chapter published by a reputable international publisher; or (ii) a monograph published by a reputable international publisher; or (iii) a report in the proceedings of a peer-reviewed international conference with an ISBN; or (iv) an article published in a peer-reviewed, reputable foreign scientific journal with an ISSN;

+ Two international articles/reports in one of the following publications: (i) reference book chapters published by reputable international publishers; or (ii) monographs published by reputable international publishers; or (iii) reports in peer-reviewed international conference proceedings with ISBN; or (iv) articles published in peer-reviewed, reputable foreign scientific journals with ISSN.

3. Knowledge Output Standards

PLO 01: Identify and orient the key issues of historical science in general and the direction of in-depth research in 5 areas: Historiography and Historiography; Archaeology; Vietnamese History; World History; and History of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

PLO 02: Objectively evaluate research issues in historical science and specialized directions related to historical and cultural aspects.

PLO 03: Synthesizing a system of specialized knowledge, theories, and research methods in history to solve complex academic problems and create new knowledge in research and teaching.

4. Skill Output Standards

PLO 04: Proficiently design and construct scientific research projects and plans that meet social ethical standards, aiming to solve theoretical and practical problems in 5 specialized fields of History.

PLO 05: Establishing in-depth professional assessments based on the synthesis of theoretical and practical research results to serve scientific publication, teaching, knowledge dissemination, and policy consulting activities.

5. Output standards regarding autonomy and responsibility.

PLO 06: Proficiently organize and implement in-depth research topics and projects of theoretical or applied nature in the fields of history, culture, and creativity.

PLO 07: To provide expert conclusions and assessments to guide community values, contribute to the global academic network's knowledge base, and advise policymakers.

6. Job positions after graduation

After graduation, PhDs in History can work in the following agencies and organizations:

- Research and teaching of history in universities, high schools, institutes, research centers, museums, and archives...;

- Working at cultural agencies at the central and local levels;

- Working in press, media, and publishing agencies;

- Working in agencies within the political system that utilize historical knowledge;

- Working in private companies and organizations operating in the fields of education, culture, media, design, and creativity.

- Working in non-governmental organizations, non-profit organizations, centers, and development projects.

7. Opportunities for further learning and professional development after graduation.

They have the potential to continue self-study, lifelong learning, and updating their knowledge of theory, methods, and practice to serve their research, teaching, and practice of history.

PART III: TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT METHODS

1. Teaching methods:

Teaching methods include forms such as lectures, discussions, presentations, etc., which are organized simultaneously throughout the teaching and learning process.

2. Evaluation method:

Assessment methods include: Regular assessments (10%), with forms such as attendance checks, attendance evaluations, participation in class discussions, group presentations, tests, etc.; mid-term assessments (30%), (with forms such as in-class written exams or essays); and end-of-course assessments (60%), with forms such as in-class written exams, essays, or oral examinations.
