- Research methods used
The thesis was conducted using the following main methods:
- Key results
Firstly, the thesis has adapted and expanded upon existing research models on climate change response, particularly the Theory of Rational Action (TRA), the Theory of the Three Core Sustainable Principles (TPL), and the Stakeholder Theory, to explore the understanding and responses to climate change by stakeholders, tailored to the context of coastal tourism development in Thanh Hoa in particular and Vietnam in general.
Secondly, the measurement components of Wei, J., Hansen, A., Zhang, Y., Li, H., Liu, Q., Sun, Y., & Bi, P. (2014) were tested from the perspective of marine tourism in the context of climate change. These measurement variables were applied to determine the understanding and behavior of stakeholders in responding to climate change in sustainable marine tourism development in Thanh Hoa.
Thirdly, the thesis analyzed and assessed the current state of climate change impacts on Thanh Hoa's coastal tourism. Based on the use of in-depth interviews and appropriate sociological research methods, the thesis focused on processing and analyzing 852 survey questionnaires to evaluate the understanding of climate change, its impacts on Thanh Hoa's coastal tourism, and the responses to climate change among stakeholders.
- Novel contributions of the thesis
+ In terms of theory:
Firstly, this is one of the first studies in Vietnam to research coastal tourism in the context of climate change, particularly focusing on the behavior of stakeholders at coastal tourist destinations. The thesis identified the current impact of climate change on coastal tourism activities and predicted these impacts in the future according to various climate change scenarios. Furthermore, the thesis...The behaviors of stakeholders regarding climate change in the context of coastal tourism development have been defined. These results may be useful for future studies on the behavior of stakeholders in localities with coastal tourism development projects. Furthermore, the thesis has supplemented and developed a scale measuring the impact, understanding, and behavior of stakeholders involved in coastal tourism development. These components can be inherited and used for future studies on the behavior of stakeholders in coastal tourism development.
Secondly, the thesis analyzed and assessed the current impact of climate change on Thanh Hoa's coastal tourism. These results can be useful for relevant authorities in Thanh Hoa's coastal tourism destinations in formulating policies and plans to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change, thereby promoting sustainable coastal tourism development in Thanh Hoa.
+ Practical significance:
Firstly, the research results provide policymakers with the means to develop sustainable policies and solutions for coastal tourism development in Thanh Hoa in particular and other locations in Vietnam with similar conditions.
Secondly, the completed thesis contributes to improving the quality of teaching and scientific research. The thesis serves as a valuable reference for tourism management agencies, tourism business administrators, and local communities. It also helps tourism management agencies develop policies and measures to manage and raise tourist awareness regarding sustainable tourism development at tourist destinations.
Thirdly, the thesis provides a fairly clear overview of domestic and international studies on climate change and the impacts of climate change on tourism development, including studies on climate change in Vietnam and tourism in Thanh Hoa. The scientific and systematic review method clearly identifies research gaps that need further study, thereby demonstrating that the thesis topic remains relevant.
Fourth, the thesis analyzed and assessed the current state of climate change impacts on Thanh Hoa's coastal tourism. Based on the use of in-depth interviews and appropriate sociological research methods, the thesis focused on processing and analyzing 852 survey questionnaires to evaluate understanding of climate change and its impacts on Thanh Hoa's coastal tourism.
Fifth, the thesis has provided several implications and suggested research directions for stakeholders. These recommendations are relevant to current practices and are feasible.
- Conclude
+ Research results confirm that climate change can impact any coastal tourist destination. The impacts of climate change can manifest in both the sea and coastal inland areas. The impact of climate change on coastal tourism can be positive or negative depending on many factors, including specific tourism activities and destinations.
+ The research results also show that the mitigation and adaptation behaviors of stakeholders contribute positively to the sustainable development of marine tourism. This indicates that stakeholders have a fairly good understanding of the nature and impacts of climate change. Stakeholders' understanding of the impacts of climate change is a crucial factor in promoting mitigation and adaptation behaviors. When stakeholders have a high level of understanding of the impacts of climate change, they will recognize the importance of implementing measures to reduce environmental impacts and adapt to changes towards the sustainable development of marine tourism. Based on this, the thesis has analyzed the policy implications to contribute to the sustainable development of marine tourism in Thanh Hoa in particular and in Vietnam in general.
