PART I: GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE TRAINING PROGRAM

2. Objectives of the training program

2.1. General Objectives

The research-oriented training program aims to cultivate a team of highly qualified doctoral-level experts in literature, developing students' independent research capabilities based on in-depth, up-to-date knowledge and advanced, interdisciplinary research methods related to Vietnamese literature, foreign literature, literary theory, and folklore. Graduates with a doctoral degree in Literature will be able to master and update scientific theories and research methods with a modern social science mindset, relevant to the practical development of literature both domestically and internationally; possess the capacity for independent research and the creation of new knowledge; and be capable of guiding scientific research and organizing research within their specialized field. They are capable of participating in domestic and international discussions in the field of literary research and meeting job requirements at high schools, colleges, universities, research institutes, publishing houses, press and media agencies, state management agencies, and organizations and projects in the fields of culture, literature, and art.

2.2. Specific Objectives

- Specific Objective 1 (O1): The training program helps learners systematize in-depth knowledge of Vietnamese literature and representative literatures around the world (including folk literature and scholarly literature) along with literary theories; access up-to-date, modern scientific issues related to literature and specific, advanced research methodologies that can be applied in the field of literary research.

- Specific Objective 2 (O2): The training program develops in learners the ability to master the methodological foundations and research methods that are both in-depth and specific at a high level, thereby enabling them to discover, analyze, and solve scientific problems in a creative and unique way; and to participate in professional discussions domestically and internationally in the field of literary research.

- Specific Objective 3 (O3): The training program aims to develop in learners the qualities of a professional such as academic autonomy, the ability to proactively establish and conduct independent research in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary fields of literature; high professional ethics and social responsibility; the ability to lead and guide academic research, develop new research to participate in solving practical problems.

3. Admission Information

3.1. Admission method:

Admission is based on the evaluation of professional profiles in accordance with the regulations of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-Hanoi).

3.2. Eligibility Criteria:

3.2.1. Educational requirements

- Must have graduated with a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with a GPA of Excellent or higher in a relevant field, or have graduated with an equivalent qualification at level 7 of the Vietnamese National Qualifications Framework in certain specialized fields relevant to the doctoral program. If the candidate requires supplementary studies, these must be completed before the decision to recognize them as a doctoral candidate is made.

- Diplomas issued by foreign educational institutions must undergo recognition procedures in accordance with current regulations.

3.2.2. Research Competency Requirements

- Meet the entry requirements according to the training program standards issued by the Ministry of Education and Training and of the doctoral training program for which you are applying.

- Candidates must demonstrate research experience through a master's thesis from a research-oriented training program and published works as required by the training unit (if any). Specifically, candidates with an applied-oriented master's degree or a master's degree in a relevant field who have to complete supplementary courses, or candidates applying from a bachelor's degree, must be the author or co-author of at least one scientific publication. Scientific publications can be articles in specialized scientific journals or scientific reports published in the proceedings of national or international peer-reviewed scientific conferences or seminars, with an ISBN related to the field or research topic, and recognized by the professorship/associate professorship council of the discipline/interdisciplinary field.

- The research proposal should clearly state the proposed topic, research field; reasons for choosing the research field and topic; a brief overview of the research situation in that field domestically and internationally; research objectives; some key research contents; research methods and expected results; reasons for choosing the training institution; implementation plan during the training period; the candidate's experience, knowledge, understanding, and preparation for undertaking the doctoral dissertation. The proposal may also suggest a supervisor.

- A letter of recommendation from at least one scientist holding the title of professor, associate professor, or a doctorate in science or a PhD, who has collaborated professionally with the applicant and is knowledgeable in the field the applicant intends to research. The letter of recommendation must include comments and assessments of the applicant regarding:

+ Moral character, abilities and scientific research attitude, and professional qualifications of the applicant;

+ For scientists who meet the criteria for supervising doctoral students and agree to act as thesis supervisors, additional comments on the urgency and feasibility of the research topic and content should be included; and the ability to mobilize doctoral students for research topics and projects, as well as the available funding for the doctoral students' research activities (if any), should be clearly stated.

+ Other comments and levels of support and recommendations for the candidate to pursue doctoral studies.

3.2.3. Foreign language requirements

- Applicants who are Vietnamese citizens must meet the foreign language proficiency requirements (in one of the following languages: English, Russian, German, French, Chinese, Japanese, Korean) that align with the foreign language output standards of the training program, as evidenced by one of the following diplomas or certificates:

+ A university degree or higher awarded by a foreign educational institution, a branch of a foreign educational institution in Vietnam, or a Vietnamese educational institution to a full-time student in a foreign language;

+ A university degree in a foreign language or foreign language pedagogy awarded by a Vietnamese educational institution;

+ Possess a foreign language certificate equivalent to level 4 according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam, valid for 2 years from the date of the foreign language exam to the date of application, issued by institutions accepted by the Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnam National University, Hanoi;

- Applicants who are foreign citizens and register for doctoral programs taught in Vietnamese must have a Vietnamese language certificate of at least level 4 or higher according to the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework for Foreigners, or have graduated from a university (or equivalent qualification or higher) where the training program was taught in Vietnamese.

3.2.4. Other requirements

- A clean personal record, not currently serving a criminal sentence or subject to disciplinary action at the level of a warning or higher.

- I am healthy enough to study.

- I commit to fulfilling my financial obligations during the training period as stipulated by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

3.3. List of suitable industries

- Literature, Vietnamese Literature, Folk Literature, Foreign Literature, Literary Theory, Comparative Literature;

- The field of study is defined in the training program standards issued by the Ministry of Education and Training;

- For cases where there are no established training program standards for the corresponding field or group of disciplines, the specialized unit must have a scientific and practical basis, determined by the Scientific and Training Council of the specialized unit and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, to identify the discipline with the closest professional foundation to the training program and determine the corresponding supplementary courses (if needed); report to VNU before enrollment and be responsible for this professional evaluation.

3.4. Projected enrollment size:

- According to the quotas granted annually by Vietnam National University, Hanoi (expected to be 3-5 doctoral candidates per year);

- The detailed admission plan is implemented according to the Admission Regulations, the annual postgraduate admission guidelines of VNU, and the admission scheme of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities approved by VNU (if any).

PART II: LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

1. Thesis requirements

- A dissertation is an independent, systematic, and in-depth scientific research work by a doctoral candidate, containing new contributions to the theory and practice of literature, valuable in developing and increasing scientific knowledge, and comprehensively addressing the issues within the dissertation's research objectives, arguments, and research results that need to be defended.

- The research results in the dissertation must be the author's own research, primarily obtained during their studies, and must not have been published in any other research works by others, ensuring academic integrity and compliance with current intellectual property laws. If using the results or materials of others, clear citations must be provided. If the dissertation is a scientific work or part of a scientific work of a group in which the author made a major contribution, documents showing the consensus of the group members allowing the author to use the collective results to write the dissertation must be submitted.

- The dissertation must be written in Vietnamese, using Unicode characters, Times New Roman font, size 13, and no more than 300 A4 pages in length, excluding appendices. It must include a declaration by the doctoral candidate regarding the content of the dissertation, with at least 50% of the pages dedicated to the candidate's own research results and arguments. The dissertation abstract must accurately reflect the structure, layout, and content of the dissertation and must include the full text of the dissertation's conclusions. The dissertation information sheet, approximately 3 to 5 pages (300 to 500 words) in both Vietnamese and English, should summarize the basic content, new findings, and the most important research results and contributions of the dissertation.

2. Research competency requirements

- Doctoral candidates must publish the research results of their dissertation in a specialized scientific journal as the main author (first name/corresponding author), achieving a total score of 2.0 or higher based on the maximum score stipulated by the State Council of Professors for each type of work (no scoring is allowed for co-authors). International publications must be written in a foreign language; articles published in domestic specialized scientific journals included in the list of journals with a minimum evaluation score of 0.75 points stipulated by the State Council of Professors must meet one of the following criteria:

+ Have at least one article published in a scientific journal listed in the Web of Science or Scopus database (hereinafter referred to as WoS/Scopus database);

+ Possess one granted patent/utility model and at least one international article/report in one of the following publications: (i) a reference book chapter published by a reputable international publisher, or (ii) a monograph published by a reputable international publisher, or (iii) a report in the proceedings of a peer-reviewed international conference with an ISBN, or (iv) an article published in a peer-reviewed, reputable foreign scientific journal with an ISSN;

+ Have at least two international articles/reports in one of the following publications: (i) reference book chapters published by reputable international publishers, or (ii) monographs published by reputable international publishers, or (iii) reports in peer-reviewed international conference proceedings with ISBN, or (iv) articles published in peer-reviewed foreign professional scientific journals with ISSN.

3. Knowledge Output Standards

3.1. Supplementary course knowledge (for doctoral candidates without a master's degree)

- PLO1: Analyze theoretical and practical issues in the professional field based on knowledge of philosophical worldview and methodology.

- PLO2: Systematize fundamental knowledge in literary research according to the issues of cultural approaches to Vietnamese literature and the history of the development of literary criticism theory systems in the world.

- PLO3: Connecting the knowledge system between specialized directions in literary research, including aesthetic aspects and contemporary issues of Vietnamese literature, aesthetic characteristics, genre poetics in some world literatures, basic and comparative research methods in literature, modern and contemporary issues of folklore, as well as the relationship of folklore with literature.

- PLO4: Systematizing research content belonging to specialized research directions, including:

+ In-depth study of Vietnamese literature: Identifying research content belonging to the in-depth study of Vietnamese literature, such as analyzing phenomena of Vietnamese literature from the medieval, modern to contemporary periods, including in-depth issues of genres, author types, poetics, aesthetic characteristics of Vietnamese literature… according to the laws of development in each stage of literary history; systematizing research methods with specific characteristics in the study of Vietnamese literature.

+ Specialized focus on foreign literature: Identifying research content belonging to the specialized focus on foreign literature, such as analyzing phenomena in world literature (including authors, groups of authors, trends, movements, schools, issues related to the artistic world of the works...) in the past and present; surveying and explaining phenomena and issues in different foreign literatures; comparing the literatures of countries and nations around the world with Vietnamese literature according to the theoretical criteria of the laws of literary development.

+ In-depth study of literary theory: Identifying research content belonging to the in-depth study of literary theory, such as updating and applying modern knowledge, methods, approaches, and theories to examine literary works and phenomena; pointing out the specific laws of literary development within textual, genre, cultural, and interdisciplinary frameworks.

+ Specialized Research in Folklore: Identify research content belonging to the specialized research direction of folklore, such as analyzing the basic issues of Vietnamese folklore, including in-depth issues of genre, poetics, interdisciplinary research directions, and their applicability in life; surveying and explaining the genres, phenomena, and issues of Vietnamese folklore in comparison with folklore of other literatures in the world; systematizing the specific research methods in the study of Vietnamese folklore.

3.2. Knowledge of doctoral coursework, doctoral dissertations, and review essays.

- PLO5: This section summarizes fundamental professional issues related to the knowledge system of genres and the genre system existing in the history of Vietnamese literature; the overall picture of modern Western literary criticism theory; the system of major trends and tendencies in the contemporary theoretical landscape and their application to literary research; and theoretical and practical issues of folklore studies, folk literature in the world and in Vietnam.

- PLO6: Develop specialized viewpoints on in-depth issues in the following areas:

+ In-depth research direction on Vietnamese literature: Synthesizing in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and critical thought of medieval Vietnamese literature; identifying the development of literary theory and doctrine in Vietnam in relation to interaction and adaptation with major literary theory and doctrine systems worldwide; synthesizing systematic knowledge about the three religions (Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism), especially evaluating the theoretical aspects of these three religions that strongly influenced the literary history of East Asia in general and Vietnamese literature in particular; assessing the important role of the Self-Reliance Literary Group in the modernization of Vietnamese literature; identifying the characteristics of Eastern and Western literary criticism and evaluating their impact on Vietnamese literary criticism.

+ Specialized focus on Foreign Literature: Synthesize in-depth knowledge of the main characteristics of the poetics of several classical Russian literary authors associated with orthodox Christian conceptions of the world and humanity; assess the relationship between Western and Chinese literature from the perspectives of historical cultural exchange, the impacts and influences in the development process, and the origins of literary innovations; evaluate the role of religion in Eastern literature as manifested in the creation of ideological foundations, the influence on the formation of genres, as well as the development process and literary achievements; synthesize core knowledge about the history of development and in-depth knowledge about the genre characteristics and poetic characteristics of Chinese poetry.

+ In-depth focus on Literary Theory: Synthesizes in-depth knowledge of literary criticism trends; evaluates innovations in literary theory research and the practical application of literary theory in Vietnam today; synthesizes theoretical knowledge about genres and their presence and transformation in the history of Vietnamese literature; assesses the changes in the multimedia cultural environment and the current position of literature and art, as well as provides predictions about the relationship and impact of media on various artistic fields; and discusses the relationship between literature and culture, as well as approaching literary phenomena from a cultural perspective.

+ Specialized focus on Folklore: Synthesizing in-depth knowledge on theoretical and practical issues concerning the genre of folklore, the existence of folklore in contemporary society, and the contemporary human interaction with folk culture; theoretical issues regarding methods of collecting, compiling, and editing folklore to apply to the collection, compilation, and editing of folklore in a specific locality; providing a comprehensive and systematic assessment of the folk culture of ethnic minorities in Vietnam based on ethnic folklore materials; synthesizing a theoretical framework on the study of festivals in contemporary society; developing approaches and experiments on specific topics to create a solid and scientifically grounded direction in the study of folk festivals.

- PLO7: Develop research products that express personal viewpoints surrounding the arguments, relationships, and structural principles of the research problem; propose new and creative ideas related to theoretical and practical issues in literature, linked to specialized areas of Vietnamese literature, foreign literature, literary theory, and folklore.

4. Skill Output Standards

- PLO8: Mastering scientific theories and applied research methods in literary studies, focusing on specialized areas such as Vietnamese literature, foreign literature, literary theory, and folklore, in order to enrich and supplement literary knowledge.

- PLO9: Proposing personal viewpoints that contribute to the creative and unique resolution of scientific issues in literature, linked to specialized areas such as Vietnamese literature, foreign literature, literary theory, and folklore.

- PLO10: Managing and overseeing professional activities in the field of literary research; discussing professional topics at domestic and international forums to exchange, enrich knowledge, and disseminate new ideas and discoveries in literary research related to specialized areas of Vietnamese literature, foreign literature, literary theory, and folklore.

- PLO11: Organize professional exchange activities and literary research related to in-depth study of Vietnamese literature, foreign literature, literary theory, and folklore at the level of independent individual work or group work.

6. Job positions for graduate students after graduation.

After graduating with a PhD in Literature, graduates possess the ability and qualifications for independent scientific research, can conduct research at research institutes, become lecturers at universities and colleges; teachers at specialized high schools; and work in the fields of journalism and media, publishing, cultural management, literature, arts, and other areas of social sciences and humanities.

With the knowledge, skills, and qualities acquired, graduates can further develop their foreign language and professional skills to independently undertake larger research projects or apply for postdoctoral research programs domestically and internationally; they can also improve their research skills and capabilities in their current work or manage, lead, and carry out other research projects on literature or related fields.
