History of formation

The Faculty of International Studies was established on October 21, 1995 by the decision of the President of Hanoi National University. Up to now (2024), after nearly 30 years of continuous and persistent efforts with high determination, teachers and students have built the Faculty of International Studies from a completely new training unit into a reliable, high-quality address, recognized by society and with its own identity. It is a combination of training - research on international issues closely related to the position and role of Vietnam in the international arena; between global issues and regional issues; between theoretical issues and serving social practice.
Regarding staff and organization, the Faculty of International Studies currently has 17 staff (16 lecturers and 1 specialist) including Professors, Associate Professors, PhDs, and Masters. The outstanding characteristics of the Faculty of International Studies' teaching staff are that they are young, most of them have been trained abroad, have good professional qualifications and foreign languages, and have the ability to inherit, innovate and integrate.
Regarding training, the training program of the Faculty of International Studies is built on the basic, systematic, modern and integrated principles. In addition to the general knowledge of the Ministry of Education and Training, students of International Studies are equipped with the following basic knowledge:
1) Basic knowledge of social sciences, political sciences and law in the fields of social sciences and humanities and social and behavioral sciences;
2) The block of specialized knowledge and skills in research, teaching, practice in International Studies and soft skills helps learners to be able to solve practical problems, have critical thinking, work independently, be ready to cooperate, have autonomy and accountability to society;
3) In-depth knowledge of International Studies with 4 majors: International Relations, European Studies, American Studies and International Development Studies
Each year, the Faculty of International Studies enrolls approximately 80-100 undergraduate students. Since 2004, the Faculty has enrolled and trained masters in International Relations, with an average of 25-30 students per course. Since 2014, the Faculty has enrolled and trained PhD students in International Relations.
Regarding scientific research and international cooperation, the outstanding feature of the Faculty of International Studies is the harmonious combination of teaching and scientific research, scientific research and international cooperation. After nearly 30 years of research and teaching, the staff of the Faculty have published 305 articles in domestic and foreign journals, 90 textbooks, monographs, references, and translated books, have been and are carrying out 72 scientific research topics at all levels and have presented hundreds of scientific reports at international and domestic conferences. The Faculty has built reliable and effective cooperative relationships with many universities in France, Germany, the United States, Japan, Korea, Australia, etc., as well as many diplomatic agencies in Hanoi, many international organizations such as the Ford Foundation, the Asia Foundation, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, the Ireland Foundation, etc. With the support of the Ford Foundation, the Faculty has joined the Diplomatic Academy and the Faculty of International Relations, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM to form a research and training network on International Relations/International Studies. With the support of the Asia Foundation, the Faculty has built the first systematic American Studies curriculum in Vietnam. With the support of Irish scholars, the Faculty is implementing a project to develop the International Development Studies major. At the same time, the Faculty has cooperated with many universities in Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, Da Lat, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, and An Giang to build programs and share experiences in teaching and researching American Studies, in line with Vietnam's training goals. In addition, the Faculty has also received effective cooperation from most international research institutes under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.
Up to now, the Faculty of International Studies has built a solid foundation, affirmed its position and determined the direction of long-term, stable and sustainable development.

Mission

As a member unit of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Faculty of International Studies is responsible for orienting teaching and scientific research activities according to the philosophy of "Liberal Education" of the University. The Faculty carries out its mission of training high-quality human resources with the ability to research international issues, contributing to policy advice for the Party and the State on issues related to foreign policy and international relations with the special feature of the International Studies major being "Learning the world to understand Vietnam" and the motto of action being: Creativity - Inspiration - Responsibility - Student Support.

Outstanding achievements

• In the field of training, the International Studies department of the International Studies Department has been known as a prestigious and quality training institution on international relations in Vietnam and the International Studies Department is one of the few institutions in the country that has all 3 levels of training (bachelor, master, doctorate) in the field of International Relations. As of 2024, the International Studies Department has trained more than 2,600 bachelors, more than 400 masters and 90 doctors.
• Contributed many quality monographs and lecture materials for courses related to International Relations research.
• In the field of international cooperation, the Faculty of International Studies has maintained relations with many international funds, organized high-quality international conferences that have been well-regarded.
• Every year, students have the opportunity to exchange and interact abroad through internship/practicum programs and student exchanges in Malaysia, Thailand, China, Taiwan (China)...
