Inheriting from Hanoi University of Science, up to now, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has affirmed its identity and strength in the basic sciences of Social Sciences and Humanities. But that does not mean that the University is only "limited" to basic sciences; on the contrary, based on that basic science, the University has pioneered in opening a series of new training majors to meet social needs such as: Journalism, Oriental Studies, Tourism Studies, International Studies, Information Science, Archival Studies and Office Administration, Social Work... which are of great interest to society. Some majors are still very young, although newly established but have great appeal to learners such as Political Science (2008), Anthropology (2009), Vietnam Studies (2010). Most recently, in 2013, the Public Relations major enrolled students for the first time, which will certainly attract a lot of students. It can be affirmed that it is the strong basic science foundation that has helped the School's new majors develop rapidly, with quality and unique identity.
- But some people say that social sciences and humanities are not attracting as many people as other trendy professions. How does the University view this issue, Professor?
Society is often dominated by temporary trends, which can also be a shortage of human resources in a profession at a certain time. But that does not mean that other professions have no value. Social Sciences and Humanities has an extremely important position and role in building the development direction, cultural foundation, society, and people of a nation and a country. People working in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities have a very large and separate career field in the general career picture of society.
In recent times, many Party leaders, leaders of ministries and sectors have visited and worked at the School, such as President Truong Tan Sang, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan. The results of these working sessions demonstrate the Party and State's interest and appreciation for the role of the Social Sciences and Humanities sectors in the country's development.
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is well aware of its role and mission, on the one hand constantly improving the quality of training, considering quality as the top factor to affirm the prestige and brand of the University; on the other hand, it is also very active in diversifying training programs, innovating in the admission process (including the entrance exam) to better reach learners. The reality of training and admission over the past years shows that the demand for the Social Sciences and Humanities sector has not decreased: registration for the entrance exam to the University in 2012 increased by 27% compared to 2011, many training majors of the University have had very high entrance scores for many consecutive years. Changes in demand for the Social Sciences and Humanities sectors are there but are reflected differently in each profession and each content of the training program.
President Truong Tan Sang speaks at the opening ceremony of the 2012-2013 school year at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
- Could you please elaborate on the innovations to improve the training quality of the School in recent times?
With the goal of high-quality training and integration with regional and world higher education, the School has made strong innovations to improve the quality of training as well as to get closer to social needs and international standards. The School has transformed the training program according to output standards with outstanding advantages such as: clearly defining output standards on knowledge, skills, and careers for learners suitable for each training sector; building a training program towards flexibility in the training organization process, providing opportunities for students to participate in different combined training models such as major - minor, double major, double degree...
With the credit-based training method, students become the center of the training process, are able to promote creativity, take the initiative in planning their studies, choosing classes, choosing teachers, accumulating knowledge, and can shorten the learning process according to their abilities and time. The school also has a high-quality training system (Literature, History, Philosophy, Management Science) and an international-class training program (Linguistics) to provide students with the best learning conditions, leading lecturers and training quality comparable to many prestigious universities in the region.
In addition, the School strictly implements quality assessment activities, internal and external evaluation. In December 2012, the School was certified by VNU as meeting national training standards for the second cycle with more than 98% of the criteria meeting the standards.
- What has the school done to increase career opportunities for students after graduation, professor?
Since 2009, to help students increase their chances of finding a job after graduation, the School has cooperated with the University of Foreign Languages (VNU) to implement a dual degree program in English/Chinese Tourism. After implementation, realizing the great potential and demand for dual degree study, next school year, in addition to the current dual degree program in Tourism, the School plans to expand the dual degree program in Journalism, Management Science and International Studies, providing more choices for students. Students can shorten their study time to less than 4 years/1 degree and accumulate 2 degrees in about 5 years.
If in the past, foreign languages were a limitation for students, now, with more professional and focused teaching and training at the University of Foreign Languages (VNU) and the application of the output standard of 4.0 IELTS for standard students, 5.0 IELTS for CLC students, 6.0 IELTS for NVCL students, students also have a great advantage in competing for jobs. In addition, the University also expands cooperation with many labor recruitment agencies in Hanoi and other localities, actively introducing students for internships and jobs.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh awarded bachelor of science degrees to students of course QH-2008-X (K53).
- In addition to the two traditional exam blocks C and D, the School has added block A (since 2010) and B (since 2012). What is the significance of this change and will it continue this year, Professor?
For the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, expanding the enrollment block aims to increase the ability to select more good and excellent candidates while opening up equal learning opportunities for candidates of all blocks - those who are interested in and have the ability to study Social Sciences and Humanities.
In the past, we often thought that only candidates who were good at Literature, History, and Geography were suitable for the majors of Social Sciences and Humanities. However, those who have studied and researched Social Sciences and Humanities understand that to be good at social subjects, good logical thinking skills are very necessary. Many great scientists in Social Sciences and Humanities at Hanoi National University, before becoming passionate and successful in their careers, were students who were very good at natural sciences. Similarly, candidates who took the A block exam and "dared" to choose to study Social Sciences and Humanities are certainly not bad at Literature and History. In 2012, the number of applications for the A block exam to the university increased by 200% compared to 2011, showing the great demand for candidates in this block to study Social Sciences and Humanities.
In 2013, block B was still applied to enroll in Psychology, expanding block A enrollment to 14 majors, in which Public Relations and Social Work majors recruited block A for the first time.
- As a student of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, what special benefits will students receive, professor?
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is proud to have a traditional, high-quality academic environment that has been affirmed domestically and internationally, a strong staff and lecturers with many leading scientists, and a modern training program that is up-to-date with the world. In addition, the training philosophy is to take the learner as the center, in addition to providing knowledge, teachers focus on training to improve students' thinking, creativity, and initiative in learning. These are very good conditions for learners to practice and improve their own abilities that not all training institutions have.
In the 2013-2014 school year, for the first time, a preferential policy for students of 06 basic science majors (Political Science, Han Nom, History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Literature) of the University was implemented. Accordingly, students of these majors will be supported with tuition fees of 4,200,000 VND/student/year in the 2013-2014 school year, along with professional development courses organized by the University without having to pay tuition fees. This is the latest incentive in the program to support the development of basic science majors of VNU.
2012 is the 5th consecutive year that the Chung-Soo Scholarship Fund has awarded 80 scholarships, each worth 250 USD, to students of the School.
In addition, in addition to scholarships from the State budget, students of these majors as well as students of the University in general have the opportunity to receive dozens of different types of scholarships from the University's partners, including many valuable international scholarships such as: Chung - Soo, Tony Chung, POSCO, Viettravel, AEON, Kumho, Asian... Students also receive scholarships to encourage learning, scholarships for poor students overcoming difficulties of the University if they have good academic results. Students with difficult circumstances can be considered for preferential loans without interest at UOB Bank throughout their years of study at the University.
In addition, if they study and practice well, students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities also have the opportunity to participate in study and research exchanges abroad, have the opportunity to transfer to higher education levels or receive scholarships to study abroad at many of the world's leading universities.
Thank you, Professor!
