1. The period of the Faculty of Arts at the University
- On October 10, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh signed Decree No. 45/SL establishing the Faculty of Literature within the structure of the Vietnam National University. The Faculty of Literature was the predecessor of the current University of Social Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. October 10, 1945, has become the traditional founding day of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi.
- On November 15, 1945, at the Grand Lecture Hall at 19 Le Thanh Tong Street, the first opening ceremony of the Faculty of Literature at the University took place, presided over by President Ho Chi Minh. The Vietnamese university system under the new regime was officially born.
First Principal: Professor Dang Thai Mai.
Number of students: 253 full students and 81 auditors (participating students)
Fields of study include: Eastern Philosophy, Vietnamese Literature, Chinese Literature, Western Literature, History, Geography, and Linguistics.
Lecturers: 25 professors, including: Dang Thai Mai, Dao Duy Anh, Cao Xuan Huy, Ho Huu Tuong, Nguyen Duc Nguyen, Nguyen Van Huyen, Nguyen Manh Tuong, Nguyen Huy Bao, Cu Huy Can, Ngo Xuan Dieu, Tran Van Giap, Tran Khanh Giu, Pham Duy Khiem, Bui Ky, Nguyen Dinh Thi, and Doan Phu Tu. Notably, President Ho Chi Minh, Pham Van Dong, and Vo Nguyen Giap also participated in teaching.

2. The period of Hanoi University
- On June 4, 1956, the Government issued Decision No. 2184/TC establishing 5 universities and 15 vocational high schools, including Hanoi University, whose structure included natural sciences and social sciences (Literature and History).
- First Principal: Professor Nguy Nhu Kon Tum
- On October 15, 1956, the first opening ceremony of the University was held. The first cohort (1956-1957) consisted of 430 students.

3. The period of completion and development of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi
- On December 10, 1993, the Government issued Decree 97/CP deciding to establish the National University of Hanoi on the basis of reorganizing three major universities in Hanoi: Hanoi University of General Sciences, Hanoi Pedagogical University 1, and Hanoi University of Foreign Languages Education.
- From September 19, 1995, the member universities of Hanoi National University, including the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, officially commenced operations.

- As of 2015, the structure of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities included: 16 faculties, 10 departments, 12 centers, 1 museum, 1 institute, and 1 tourism and science service company.
- 189 textbooks published from 1995 to the present.
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS
1. Awards for scientific research:
- Ten educators were awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize, and 13 educators were awarded the State Prize for Science and Technology.
2. Teacher's title:
- 29 teachers were awarded the title of People's Teacher, and 49 teachers were awarded the title of Excellent Teacher.

- Leading the Youth Union movement of Hanoi National University in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2011.
- 100 Certificates of Merit from the Central Youth Union, Hanoi City Youth Union, and Hanoi National University Youth Union were awarded to collectives and individuals.
- Received certificates of commendation from Ha Tay and Bac Kan provinces for their volunteer work.
- The Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Union awarded Certificates of Merit in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012.
- In 2003 and 2004, the University's Student Union received a certificate of commendation from the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion for its humanitarian blood donation movement.

Veterans Association:

- 1,333 cadres and students from Hanoi University went to fight against the US to save the country. Dozens of cadres and students from the social science faculties of Hanoi University, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, bravely sacrificed their lives.
