Overview

History

Faculty of History is one of the first faculties of Hanoi General University, now University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU. According to the Decree no 775-NĐ dated September 14th, 1956 issued by Ministry of Education, Faculty of Literature-History was established. Later in 1956, the Faculty was split into faculties of History and Literature. Since then, the famous personalities and generations of bachelors, masters and doctors have been greatly contributing to Vietnam's fight for national independence and construction.

Mission

One of the central, prestigious and traditional faculties of basic science, the Faculty of History is tasked with leading the creation and dissemination of knowledge and training of high-quality and multi-faceted human resources serving the cause of national construction and development.

Prominent achievements

• Created the School of Vietnam General University's Historical Studies.

• Launched and participated in many big projects dealing with Vietnam's history and culture.

• Published nearly 6,000 domestic and international research projects.

• Trained nearly 10,000 bachelors, masters and doctors.

• Received two Orders of Hero of labor in renovation area for the Faculty (2000) and Prof. Tran Van Giau (2003).

• 06 Ho Chi Minh's awards (Prof. Tran Duc Thao, Prof. Dao Duy Anh, Prof. Tran Van Giau, Prof. Ha Van Tan, Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong, Prof. Phan Huy Le); 04 State Awards (Prof. Phan Huy Le, Prof. Phan Dai Doan, Prof. Phan Huu Dat, Prof. Nguyen Thua Hy).

• International awards: Prof Phan Huy Le received the Fukuoka International Award of Asian Culture (Japan, 1996), Palme d'Or Academy Award (France, 2002), Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France, 2011), Docteur Honoris Causa by École française d'Extrême-Orient (France, 2016); Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong received the Rockeller Fellow Award (America, 1990), The man of the year 2000 - ABC, America, 1/2000 scholars of the XXth century -IBC, Cambridge, UK, 2000, Professor Emeritus (Tokyo, Japan, 2000), (Asian Pacific Who is Who - India, 2004).

Development orientation

Continue to improve the quality of undergraduate and graduate training, focus on developing the specialized program of Culture Management and new disciplines by increasing the inter-disciplinarity and diversification of training methods, ensuring high quality, and thoroughly making use of every available potential to slowly expand the capability to serve the political and social ends of historical studies; strengthen academic activities and cooperation with regional and worldwide universities and research centers.
