History
Faculty of Oriental Studies, USSH, VNU was officially established in 1995 according to the Decision 436/TCCB issued by VNU's Director on October 21st, 1995. In fact, the Faculty started its activities in 1993, focusing on area and country studies in an inter-disciplinary way. At undergraduate level, the Faculty has founded 5 divisions, namely Chinese studies, Japanese studies, Korea studies, Indian studies and Southeast Asian studies. Every year, the required number of students admitted into the Faculty is 130. The Faculty's current curriculla are up-to-date and systematic. Based on the inter-disciplinary approach, students are able to take advantage of comprehensive knowledge regarding the history, culture, geography, literature, and political-foreign affairs of said countries. In particular, they are taught foreign languagues for specific purposes, namely English, Thai, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
Mission
The Faculty has set forth the following missions:
Training high-quality human resources specializing in country studies, meeting societal requirements in the context of integration and globalization.
Develop necessary input and provide high-quality knowledge on Oriental Studies for domestic and overseas research projects.
Prominent achievements
After 20 years of development, the Faculty has increasingly raised its status. It has trained over 2000 bachelors and over 200 masters. 90% of its graduates are able to find their right jobs. The Faculty is also training 20 research fellows (8 of whom major Southeast Asian studies).
With its excellent achievements in training and research activities, the Faculty has for several times received diplomas of merit from the VNU's Director (2009-2010, 2013-2014), the diplomas for Unit with excellent Merit from USSH, VNU (2009-2010; 2010-2011; 2012-2013; 2013-2014). Many of its lecturers have received certificates and titles from VNU.
Development orientation
By 2020, the Faculty will have developed into an Institute of Oriental Studies, combining research and training activities with quality as close as possible to that of top-notch regional universities. To this end, the Faculty is preparing the necessary conditions for developing some specialties, increasing its personnel to around 50, and ensuring 100% of its lecturers and researchers are at least Doctors; improving the admission quota to 400 at bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels; strengthening international cooperation and research, and ensuring that 50-70 research papers will be published annually.
