In addition to VNU, other Vietnamese higher education institutions are also present in this year's Ranking, such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ton Duc Thang University, Phenikaa University, Duy Tan University, FPT University, National Economics University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Ho Chi Minh City Open University.
VNU's ranking in THE Impact Ranking 2023
THE Impact Rankings aim to measure the success of higher education institutions in implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (effective since 2016), calling for global action with the goal of building peaceful, equitable and prosperous societies. In other words, this Ranking evaluates the impact and contribution of educational institutions to social development, human development, and environmental protection. In the 2023 ranking, THE Impact Rankings continues to attract the attention of 1,591 higher education institutions worldwide (an increase of 185 higher education institutions compared to the previous ranking).
Also in this ranking period, VNU participated in the ranking of 7 SDGs, of which 2 SDGs were in the top 100 and 4 SDGs were in the top 201-300, specifically as follows:
- SDG 3. Good Health and Wellbeing: ranked 801-1000 out of 1218 participating educational institutions.
- SDG 4. Quality Education: ranked 70th out of 1,304 educational institutions participating in the ranking.

- SDG 5: Gender Equality: ranked 97th out of 1081 participating educational institutions.

- SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth: ranked in the 201-300 group out of 960 educational institutions participating in the ranking.
- SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities: ranked in the 201-300 group out of 901 educational institutions participating in the ranking.
- SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: ranked 201-300 out of 910 educational institutions participating in the ranking.
- SDG 17: Partnership for the goals: ranked 201-300 out of 1,625 educational institutions participating in the ranking.
With an increase in rankings in all participating SDGs, VNU has made a strong step forward when ranking 401-600 with a score of 70.1 - an increase of 9.1 points compared to the 2022 ranking (61 points). The SDGs of VNU were selected by THE Impact Rankings to rank to calculate specific scores in the figure below.

In recent years, the number of higher education institutions in Vietnam appearing in the THE Impact Ranking has increased with 9 educational institutions ranked in 2023 compared to 7 educational institutions ranked in 2022, 4 educational institutions ranked in 2021 and only 2 educational institutions ranked in 2020. Specifically: Hanoi National University (position 401-600), Duy Tan University (position 401-600), Ton Duc Thang University (position 601-800), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (position 601-800), National Economics University (position 601-800), FPT University (position 601-800), Phenikaa University (position 801-1000) and 2 universities participating in the ranking for the first time. The rankings are Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (position 301-400) and Ho Chi Minh City Open University (position 1001+).

In Southeast Asia, Thailand has 65 higher education institutions in the Ranking and Chulalongkorn University has the highest ranking at 17th place. Malaysia has 24 higher education institutions, of which Universiti Sains Malaysia has a remarkable result at 4th place. Indonesia has 32 higher education institutions, the Philippines has 29 higher education institutions and Cambodia has 1 higher education institution participating in the Ranking.

Accordingly, the final ranking score of a higher education institution in the rankings is the average of the SDG 17 (mandatory) score (accounting for 22% of the total score) with the three highest scores among the remaining 16 SDGs (each SDG has a weight of 26%).
For each SDG, the accompanying indicators are analyzed and used in the rankings based on 4 factors:

In March 2023, in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023 (QS WUR by subject 2023), VNU continued to maintain its position in key fields with 6 fields continuing to be ranked compared to 2022. In addition, 2 groups of fields of VNU continued to be ranked: Engineering & Technology and Natural Sciences, of which the Natural Sciences group was ranked No. 1 in Vietnam. In the 6 fields of VNU that continued to be ranked by QS WUR by subject 2023, 2 fields maintained their ranking positions: Computer Science & Information Systems - top 501-550 and Mathematics - top 351-400. Also in these 6 fields, VNU continues to maintain its No. 1 position in Vietnam in 2 fields: Physics & Astronomy and Business & Management Studies.
In early February 2023, the Cybermetrics Labs (under the Spanish National Research Council) announced the first ranking of 2023, according to which VNU increased 97 places compared to the results announced in August 2022, from 758 to 661 in the world, continuing to maintain the No. 1 position in Vietnam. Webometrics is a ranking that evaluates the digital transformation capacity and excellence in international publications on the Scopus and Google Scholar systems of higher education institutions worldwide.
