The PhD program in Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies attracts students from the first year.

On October 26, 2024, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) held a ceremony to hand over the Decision on Issuing and Assigning the Training Task of the Doctoral Program in Vietnamese Studies, specializing in Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies to the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language (VSL). At the ceremony, the Faculty signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation with the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies (VNS), University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City in many fields.
The ceremony was attended by Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU; Dr. Le Thi Thanh Tam - Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Language; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Ngoc Thu - Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM, along with many lecturers and specialists from the two units. The Organizing Committee was honored to welcome the attention of many experts and representatives of universities and research institutes such as Phenikaa University, Hanoi University of Industry, Hoa Binh University, Institute of Lexicography and Vietnam Encyclopedia.

Previously, on August 30, 2024, Hanoi National University issuedDecision No. 4063/QD-VNU on promulgating the program and assigning the task of training PhD level in Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies(Vietnamese Language and Vietnam Studies). Up to now, there have been 10 Vietnamese and foreign candidates registered for this training program right from the first year of enrollment. This is an important milestone in the more than 60-year journey of training and research of the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, contributing to affirming the role and scientific position of the Faculty in training and researching Vietnamese language and culture domestically and internationally.
The PhD program in Vietnamese Studies, majoring in Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies trains domestic and foreign experts with advanced knowledge of Vietnamese language in relation to theoretical issues related to the practice of Vietnamese language, culture, country and people. PhD students in this major are capable of conducting independent research and working in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary environment; have the ability to organize research on issues in the field of Vietnamese language and contents in the field of Vietnamese studies.
After completing the doctoral training program in Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies, PhD students will become independent researchers in their specialized fields, meeting the needs of society for high-quality human resources to serve Vietnam's economic and social development strategy, and meeting the needs of Vietnamese research domestically and internationally.
During the journey of more than 60 years of formation and development, the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language has implemented Bachelor training programs (with two majors:Vietnam Studies; Vietnamese Language and Culture for Foreigners) and Master's system (Major in Vietnamese Studies) with about 1,000 Vietnamese students and 200 foreign students; more than 10,000 foreigners have studied Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture at the Faculty as well as with the Faculty's teachers at many universities and Vietnamese studies centers around the world. Many former students and trainees have become veteran diplomats and senior interpreters. Many famous Vietnamese scholars in the world have studied and worked at the Faculty. In particular, more than 15 foreign students have become Ambassadors and Temporary Representatives in Vietnam. With such a long history and science, the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language has many distinct advantages in training the PhD program specializing in Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU congratulated the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Language for being assigned a very important and meaningful training task. Sharing the advantages and difficulties of opening a highly interdisciplinary major with special significance for international cooperation, Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized that the opening of a new PhD training program in Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies is a very proud achievement, affirming the efforts of the Faculty's leadership, scientists, lecturers, specialists as well as functional units in the school.
Dr. Le Thi Thanh Tam - Head of the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Language expressed the honor and determination of the entire Faculty when accepting the new important task, and at the same time expressed gratitude for the wholehearted support of the Leaders and functional units of VNU-USSH, of experts in many fields, especially the seniors who built the foundation for the program, as well as the efforts of all lecturers and specialists of VSL.

The ceremony to hand over the Decision on Issuance and Assignment of Training Tasks was attended by leaders and lecturers of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Vocational Education and Training, along with experts and scientists from universities and research institutes.
Sharing at the ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thien Nam (former Head of the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language) expressed his emotion because after a long journey with the efforts of many generations, VSL has been assigned the task of training PhDs in Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Studies. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thien Nam said that the concept of Vietnamese Studies was first discussed at the Faculty in 1973, and to date, Vietnamese Studies has affirmed its solid and practical position domestically and internationally.
Scientists and experts attending the ceremony also shared their expectations for the development of this new field of study with the highest potential for international training cooperation, attracting the interest of many foreign scholars and students.

At the ceremony, the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City. Accordingly, the two sides will coordinate to implement many training and scientific research activities, including cooperation in training Master's and Doctoral programs in Vietnamese Studies; credit recognition of the two universities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels for Vietnamese Studies, Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Culture; exchange of students and trainees (by semester or academic year), exchange of interns. In addition, the two units will coordinate to develop a description of scientific and technological tasks at the National University level; share and participate in scientific and technological tasks at the State level; share experiences in implementing quality assessment for Vietnamese Studies at the bachelor's and master's level...
Congratulating VSL on its achievements, Associate Professor, Dr. Huynh Ngoc Thu - Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City shared that the two departments will have cooperative activities, closely linked together, and develop strongly together in training and research in this specific scientific field.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding marks a strategic and effective partnership, affirming the spirit of extensive cooperation One-USSH, One-VNU that has been affirmed between the two leading universities training in the fields of social sciences and humanities at the two ends of the country.
