11. Summary of new results of the thesis:

The main purpose of the thesis is to study and clarify the role of Solution Journalism in Vietnam in contributing to limiting the situation of violence against minors. To achieve that purpose, the thesis focuses on systematizing the theoretical basis, surveying the current situation of the issue in the press and proposing solutions and ways to apply Solution Journalism when reflecting on this topic to improve the effectiveness when writing about this issue. The research object of the thesis is Journalism solutions to the problem of child abuse in Vietnam. In this thesis, the researcher used research methods research documents, mixed content analysis, in-depth interviews and survey using Alket questionnaire. The research results show that although the Vietnamese press has made efforts in preventing the problem of violence against minors, there are still many limitations in terms of quantity, quality of information and approach to the problem. The surveyed press focuses too much on recreating events, describing in detail the injuries and family background of the perpetrators more than on analysis, commentary, or providing constructive solutions... Besides,The research results also show that the number of articles on electronic newspapers is relatively equal, but there is a significant difference compared to printed newspapers. In particular, even within the print newspaper groups Nhan Dan and Sai Gon Phong, there is a clear difference in the quantity and frequency of information. Regarding the group of information on guidelines and policies, the dissemination of legal knowledge related to violence and post-violent child care is limited in quantity and accessible content. The newspapers in the survey often use many verb phrases to describe actions in article titles, but the way of naming titles and choosing images has a clear difference between the newspapers. Specifically, Dan Tri newspaper often uses photos of events and officials, while Tuoi Tre newspaper focuses on visual images of victims. Finally, the public opinion survey shows that readers' reactions to information on violence against minors are very diverse. CThey have a high demand and prefer to see positive, accurate, objective and useful information on this issue rather than information that only describes the criminal actions and the "bitter" results of the perpetrator.

The thesis has proposed solutions to improve the quality of journalism when writing about child abuse, including: Practicing solution journalism to increase humanity with contents such as: Changing thinking and ways of exploiting information about child abuse; Avoiding sensational, biased and prejudiced news; The content of the article must explain the cause and propose solutions; The story must convey lessons, profound meanings or avoid giving too much negative information. In addition, in this chapter, the author of the thesis also proposed building a cooperation network, establishing professional departments to research the public, strengthening coordination between relevant parties and especially forming a press network for children to create a friendly information channel, helping children understand the issue of child abuse and child protection. The thesis has analyzed in depth, systematized knowledge and practical experience on Solution Journalism, especially in the context of child abuse. From there, it contributes to building and perfecting the theoretical framework for this field. The thesis has supplemented and clarified the concept and identifying characteristics of Solution Journalism, helping to define more clearly this type of journalism in the system of journalism theory, as well as identifying characteristics of Solution Journalism works written on child abuse. Clarifying the role, potential and proposing evaluation criteria. The findings of the thesis create a basic and comprehensive theoretical foundation, opening up new research directions for domestic and foreign scholars on Solution Journalism and related social issues. In addition, the research results of the thesis not only focus on the issue of child abuse but also suggest the possibility of applying Solution Journalism to many other social fields.

12. Further research directions

The application of the Solution Journalism model to solve urgent social problems in Vietnam, typically child abuse, has opened up many new and potential research directions. Based on that, further research can be developed in two main directions: In-depth research on assessing the impact and practical effectiveness of Solution Journalism (developing Solution Journalism based on a multi-platform model, journalist capacity, etc.); Research direction to expand the application of the Solution Journalism model to support vulnerable groups (people with disabilities, lonely elderly people, victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, etc.) and solve urgent social problems (Environmental protection, climate change, food safety, mental health and behavioral culture in modern society, etc.)

  11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:

The purpose of a thesis or dissertation is to investigate and clarify the role of Solutions Journalism in mitigating abuse against minors. To this end, the thesis focuses on systematizing the theoretical framework, examining the current state of the issue in the press, and arguing solutions and practical applications of Solutions Journalism to enhance the effectiveness of reporting on this topic. The research subject of the thesis is a thesis that investigates the use of Solutions Journalism in addressing the issue of abuse against minors in Vietnam. The study employs several research methods, including documentary analysis, mixed-methods content analysis, in-depth interviews, and questionnaire surveys. The research results show that although Vietnamese journalism has made efforts to prevent abuse against minors, there are still many limitations in the quantity and quality of information, and the approaches to the issue. The examined press has focused excessively on recounting events and providing graphic descriptions of injuries and the offenders' family backgrounds, rather than offering analysis, commentary, or constructive solutions. Additionally, the findings indicate that while the number of articles on this topic in online newspapers is relatively consistent, there is a significant disparity compared to print newspapers. Notably, even within the print newspaper group, Nhan Dan and Saigon Giai Phong show distinct differences in the volume and frequency of reporting. Regarding policy-related information, the dissemination of legal knowledge on abuse and post-abuse care for children remains limited in both quantity and scope. The survey newspapers often use many active verbs in their headlines; however, the styles of headlines and the choice of images differ markedly. specific, Dan Tri online often uses photos of events and officials, while Tuoi Tre online focuses on direct visual depictions of victims. Finally, a public opinion survey reveals that reader reactions to information about abuse against minors are very diverse. The public has a high demand for and prefers to see accurate, objective, and useful information on this issue, rather than reports that only describe criminal acts and the severe consequences for the offenders. The thesis has proposed solutions to improve the quality of journalism when reporting on adolescent abuse, including: practicing Solutions Journalism to enhance its humanistic aspect, with content that: changes the mindset and approach to gathering information about abuse against minors; avoids sensational, biased, and biased reporting; ensures articles explain the causes and propose solutions; and crafts stories that convey meaningful lessons while avoiding excessive negative information. Furthermore, in this chapter, the thesis also proposes building a cooperation network, establishing professional departments for audience research, strengthening coordination among relevant parties, and, in particular, forming a media network for minors to create a friendly information channel, helping them understand the issue of abuse and how to protect themselves.

The thesis provides an in-depth analysis and systematization of theoretical knowledge and practical experience regarding Solutions Journalism, particularly in the context of abuse against minors. In doing so, it contributes to building and refining the theoretical framework for this field. The thesis supplements and further clarifies the concept and identifies the characteristics of Solutions Journalism, helping to define this type of journalism within journalistic theory more clearly, as well as the features of Solutions Journalism works that address abuse against minors. It clarifies the role, potential, and proposes evaluation criteria. The findings of the thesis create a fundamental and comprehensive theoretical foundation, opening up new research avenues for both domestic and international scholars on Solutions Journalism and related social issues. Moreover, the research results are not only focused on the problem of abuse against minors but also suggest the potential for applying Solutions Journalism to many other social domains.

  1. Further research directions

The application of the Solutions Journalism model to address critical social issues in Vietnam, such as the abuse of adolescents, has unveiled promising new avenues for research. Building on this foundation, future studies can be pursued along two primary trajectories. The first focus on in-depth research to assess the tangible impacts and practical effectiveness of Solutions Journalism, including its development across multi-platform models and the enhancement of journalistic capabilities. The second trajectory involves expanding the application of the Solutions Journalism model to support vulnerable populations including individuals with disabilities, the isolated elderly, and victims of domestic violence and human trafficking and to tackle other urgent societal challenges, such as environmental protection, climate change, food safety, mental health, and the culture of conduct in contemporary society.
