The main purpose of this dissertation is to research and clarify the role of solution-oriented journalism in Vietnam in contributing to reducing child abuse. To achieve this purpose, the dissertation focuses on systematizing the theoretical basis, surveying the current state of the issue in the press, and proposing solutions and methods for applying solution-oriented journalism when reflecting on this topic to improve the effectiveness of writing about this issue. The subject of this thesis is the role of journalism in addressing the issue of child abuse in Vietnam. In this thesis, the doctoral candidate used the following research methods: save the documents, The study utilized mixed content analysis, in-depth interviews, and Alket questionnaire surveys. The results indicate that, despite efforts by the Vietnamese press to combat child abuse, there are still limitations in terms of the quantity and quality of information and the approach to the issue. The surveyed media outlets focus too much on recreating events, detailing injuries and the perpetrators' family circumstances, rather than providing analysis, commentary, or constructive solutions. Furthermore,The research results also show that the number of articles on online newspapers is relatively uniform, but there is a significant difference compared to print newspapers. In particular, even within the print newspapers Nhan Dan and Saigon Phong, there are clear differences in the quantity and frequency of information. Regarding information on policies and guidelines, the dissemination of legal knowledge related to violence and post-abuse child care is limited in both quantity and content. The surveyed newspapers often use many verb phrases to describe actions in their headlines; however, the way headlines are phrased and images are chosen differs significantly between newspapers. Specifically, Dan Tri newspaper often uses images of events and officials, while Tuoi Tre newspaper focuses on visual representations of victims. Finally, the survey of public opinion shows that readers' reactions to information about adolescent abuse are very diverse. They have a high demand for and prefer to see positive, accurate, objective, and useful information on this issue rather than information that only describes the criminal act and the "bitter" consequences for the perpetrator.

The thesis proposed solutions to improve the quality of journalism when writing about child abuse, including: Implementing journalistic practices to enhance humanistic values, such as: changing mindsets and approaches to reporting on child abuse; avoiding sensationalism, bias, and prejudice; ensuring articles explain the causes and propose solutions; and ensuring stories convey profound lessons and meanings, while avoiding excessive negative information. Furthermore, this chapter proposes building a collaborative network, establishing professional departments for public research, strengthening coordination among stakeholders, and especially forming a network of child-friendly journalism to create a child-friendly information channel, helping children understand the issue of abuse and protecting them. This dissertation provides an in-depth analysis and systematization of knowledge and practical experience regarding solutions journalism, particularly in the context of juvenile abuse. From this, it contributes to building and refining the theoretical framework for this field. The dissertation clarifies the concept and identifying characteristics of solutions journalism, helping to more clearly define this type of journalism within the system of journalistic theory, as well as the identifying characteristics of solutions journalism works on juvenile abuse. It clarifies the role, potential, and proposes evaluation criteria. The findings of the dissertation create a fundamental and comprehensive theoretical foundation, opening up new research directions for scholars both domestically and internationally on solutions journalism and related social issues. Furthermore, the research results of the dissertation not only focus on the issue of juvenile abuse but also suggest the potential application of solutions journalism to many other social fields.

12. Directions for further research

The application of the Solutions Journalism model to address pressing social issues in Vietnam, particularly child abuse, has opened up many promising new research avenues. Based on this, further research can be developed in two main directions: In-depth research on assessing the impact and practical effectiveness of Solutions Journalism (developing Solutions Journalism based on a multi-platform model, journalistic capacity, etc.); and research expanding the application of the Solutions Journalism model to support vulnerable groups (people with disabilities, lonely elderly people, victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, etc.) and address urgent social issues (environmental protection, climate change, food safety, mental health, and cultural behavior in modern society, etc.).

  11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:

The purpose of a thesis or dissertation is to investigate and clarify the role of Solutions Journalism in mitigating abuse against minors. To this end, the thesis focuses on systematizing the theoretical framework, examining the current state of the issue in the press, and arguing solutions and practical applications of Solutions Journalism to enhance the effectiveness of reporting on this topic. The research subject of the thesis is a thesis that investigates the use of Solutions Journalism in addressing the issue of abuse against minors in Vietnam. The study employs several research methods, including documentary analysis, mixed-methods content analysis, in-depth interviews, and questionnaire surveys. The research results show that although Vietnamese journalism has made efforts to prevent abuse against minors, there are still many limitations in the quantity and quality of information, and the approaches to the issue. The examined press has focused excessively on recounting events and providing graphic descriptions of injuries and the offenders' family backgrounds, rather than offering analysis, commentary, or constructive solutions. Additionally, the findings indicate that while the number of articles on this topic in online newspapers is relatively consistent, there is a significant disparity compared to print newspapers. Notably, even within the print newspaper group, Nhan Dan and Saigon Giai Phong show distinct differences in the volume and frequency of reporting. Regarding policy-related information, the dissemination of legal knowledge on abuse and post-abuse care for children remains limited in both quantity and scope. The survey newspapers often use many active verbs in their headlines; however, the styles of headlines and the choice of images differ markedly. specific, Dan Tri online often uses photos of events and officials, while Tuoi Tre online focuses on direct visual depictions of victims. Finally, a public opinion survey reveals that reader reactions to information about abuse against minors are very diverse. The public has a high demand for and prefers to see accurate, objective, and useful information on this issue, rather than reports that only describe criminal acts and the severe consequences for the offenders. The thesis has proposed solutions to improve the quality of journalism when reporting on adolescent abuse, including: practicing Solutions Journalism to enhance its humanistic aspect, with content that: changes the mindset and approach to gathering information about abuse against minors; avoids sensational, biased, and biased reporting; ensures articles explain the causes and propose solutions; and crafts stories that convey meaningful lessons while avoiding excessive negative information. Furthermore, in this chapter, the thesis also proposes building a cooperation network, establishing professional departments for audience research, strengthening coordination among relevant parties, and, in particular, forming a media network for minors to create a friendly information channel, helping them understand the issue of abuse and how to protect themselves.

The thesis provides an in-depth analysis and systematization of theoretical knowledge and practical experience regarding Solutions Journalism, particularly in the context of abuse against minors. In doing so, it contributes to building and refining the theoretical framework for this field. The thesis supplements and further clarifies the concept and identifies the characteristics of Solutions Journalism, helping to define this type of journalism within journalistic theory more clearly, as well as the features of Solutions Journalism works that address abuse against minors. It clarifies the role, potential, and proposes evaluation criteria. The findings of the thesis create a fundamental and comprehensive theoretical foundation, opening up new research avenues for both domestic and international scholars on Solutions Journalism and related social issues. Moreover, the research results are not only focused on the problem of abuse against minors but also suggest the potential for applying Solutions Journalism to many other social domains.

  1. Further research directions

The application of the Solutions Journalism model to address critical social issues in Vietnam, such as the abuse of adolescents, has unveiled promising new avenues for research. Building on this foundation, future studies can be pursued along two primary trajectories. The first focus on in-depth research to assess the tangible impacts and practical effectiveness of Solutions Journalism, including its development across multi-platform models and the enhancement of journalistic capabilities. The second trajectory involves expanding the application of the Solutions Journalism model to support vulnerable populations including individuals with disabilities, the isolated elderly, and victims of domestic violence and human trafficking and to tackle other urgent societal challenges, such as environmental protection, climate change, food safety, mental health, and the culture of conduct in contemporary society.
