The thesis is one of the few research works on professional ethics of social workers in Vietnam (case study in Hanoi), the research results have the following new points:
- With the combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, the thesis analyzed the current status of professional ethics of social workers in Hanoi city in 5 aspects: (i) professional responsibility; (ii) information confidentiality; (iii) relationship with clients; (iv) relationship with colleagues; and (v) relationship with the organization. Specifically, in the 5 research aspects, the subjects had professional ethics that were consistent with the highest professional ethical standards in the aspect of relationship with clients and the lowest in the aspect of professional responsibility.
- The thesis points out and analyzes the factors affecting the professional ethics of social workers. The demographic/social characteristics of the research subjects (such as gender, age, training level, work experience) have an impact on the professional ethics of social work practitioners. In particular, female subjects have a higher average score on professional ethics than male subjects. The group of subjects aged 31 to 40 years old, the group of subjects with postgraduate training and the group of subjects with 10 years or more of work experience have the highest appropriate professional ethics scores in all ethical aspects. The thesis results also show the impacts from both organizations and individuals on the professional ethics of the research subjects. Specifically, from an organizational perspective, increased opportunities for “ethical learning” and higher “income” were predictive of positive changes in social workers’ professional ethics. At an individual level, social workers’ perceived happiness in their work was associated with increased scores on all five dimensions of professional ethics examined in the study.
