11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
Based on the collection, synthesis, and analysis of source materials, this thesis initially identifies the historical development of the southwestern border region during the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1858). From this, the thesis contributes to clarifying the natural, demographic, and social conditions of this region in the first half of the 19th century. In particular, the section on natural conditions, reconstructed from 19th-century sources, demonstrates the strong influence of natural conditions on the organization and management of the southwestern border region.
This dissertation synthesizes and summarizes the system of research documents directly and indirectly related to the organization and management of the southwestern border region in the first half of the 19th century. Through this, it assesses the achievements and points out the gaps in research on this area.
This dissertation describes and analyzes in detail the administrative structure of the Nguyen Dynasty in the southwestern border region from the reigns of Gia Long to Tu Duc. It clarifies the role of the "dao" (districts) established and existing in this region from the Nguyen Lords' period to the reign of Emperor Minh Menh. It statistically evaluates the importance of the "Protector of Cambodia" position in the early Nguyen Dynasty. It describes the operation and transformation of the administrative organization of the provinces in the southwestern border region after Minh Menh's administrative reforms.
This thesis clarifies the self-governing institutions (based on ethnic groups) in the southwestern border region during the first half of the 19th century. Specifically, these institutions include: Vietnamese villages and hamlets; Khmer srok and phum; Chinese bang and pho; and Cham Pơ lay (Plei). From this, it identifies the characteristic organizational features and the influence of these self-governing institutions on the organization and management of communities in the southwestern border region during the Nguyen dynasty.
The thesis outlines the methods of establishing and operating administrative activities of the Nguyen Dynasty in the southwestern border region during the first half of the 19th century. Key activities identified include: establishing territorial sovereignty, setting up military outposts, land management, tax collection, and managing trade and commerce.
12. Practical applications:
The research topic of this dissertation has practical significance, providing necessary knowledge and explanations for the conflicts and problems existing in the southwestern border region of Vietnam today. Lessons from the Nguyen Dynasty show that the issue of ethnicity and national unity always holds a strategic position in the protection of national border security. At the same time, the use of military force cannot fundamentally resolve the issues of border and territorial integrity, national security and defense, and social stability.
13. Future research directions:
- Self-governing institutions of ethnic and religious communities in the southwestern border region in the 19th century.
- Environmental history of the southwestern border region.

Furthermore, the thesis synthesizes existing scholarship to evaluate the achievements and identify gaps in research on the organization and management of the Southwest frontier zone. - Management structures of ethnic communities and religious communities in the Southwest Border region in the 19th century.
