2025 marks the second year that the Bachelor of Cinematography and Popular Arts program at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) will officially enroll students. This is a new and attractive field of study for many young people who are passionate about the seventh art.

What is different about the content of the Cinema and Popular Arts training program at VNU-USSH?

Dr. Nguyen Thi Nam Hoang (Deputy Head of the Faculty of Literature) said: The new and different point of the Bachelor of Cinema and Popular Arts program at VNU-USSH is not only to train students in professional skills and necessary supporting skills directly related to careers in the field of cinema: director, screenwriter, producer, film archivist, etc., but also to aim at training high-quality human resources capable of researching, grasping, shaping national cinema and popular art, promoting major cinema/popular art trends in the world into Vietnam and introducing Vietnamese cinema/art abroad, at the same time, being able to directly participate in the life and movement of contemporary popular culture.
The curriculum, in addition to the general knowledge of the social sciences and humanities, also equips students with a rich body of specialized knowledge: Popular art in the digital age; Overview of film and television genres; Overview of world film history; Popular culture of countries around the world; Narrative, virtual reality and digital technology; Popular music; Contemporary visual arts; Contemporary theater and performance arts; Film drama in multimedia creation; Vietnamese and world cinema; Film curatorialism and art curatorialism; Film screenwriting; Film directing, editing, cinematography, sitcoms, long-running television series and reality television; Film research and criticism; Artistic communication; Film project and fund management; Film production and archiving;…
In addition to the required courses, students can choose many interesting courses based on their interests, strengths, and career aspirations.
Associate Professor Hoang Cam Giang (Head of the Department of Art Studies, Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities) further shared: It can be said that the Film and Popular Arts training program at VNU-USSH does not repeat existing training programs but opens a new direction, supplementing human resources to fill gaps in the labor market for positions such as screenwriter, curator, critic, researcher, theorist, digital content creator, film and popular arts project manager, and archiving and exploitation of film and popular arts heritage. This is also a practical way to contribute to the training of human resources for the cultural industry, which the Party and State are currently promoting.

Dr. Le Thi Tuan (lecturer at the Faculty of Literature) shared: During the training process, the Department of Art Studies, under the Faculty of Literature, VNU-USSH, focuses on connecting students to participate in film premieres and directly engage in production stages.
