On October 30, 2009, a training conference attended by representatives from member units and various functional departments of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) was held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc, Vice Director of VNU, chaired the conference. The main discussion at the conference focused on exchanging experiences in organizing and implementing credit-based training among units, as well as developing curricula and organizing common courses. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Quyet - Head of the Training Department - represented the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and presented a report on the University's experience in implementing credit-based training over the past period. The report stated that, as of the 2009-2010 academic year, credit-based training had been applied to all full-time training courses and the QH-2009 part-time course. Among the stages of credit-based training, the timetable scheduling process is a crucial step. Based on the teaching schedule and faculty, the departments send the Training Department a list of proposed courses to be taught in the next semester. The Training Department then creates the timetables and sends them back to the departments for feedback, finalization, and publication on the website for students to choose from. Following this, students register for courses. In the second semester of the 2008-2009 academic year, the university organized nearly 600 courses across more than 200 majors for students to register for. In the first semester of this academic year, the university organized approximately 800 courses, of which about 80 to 100 courses allowed students to choose different class times. Regarding course registration, in the first semester of this academic year, the university implemented online course registration instead of the previous intranet registration, making the registration process much easier for students. The organization of teaching is strictly decentralized between the Training Department and the academic affairs offices of each department. All participating lecturers are provided with lecturer handbooks, which clearly outline teaching procedures such as receiving teaching schedules, updating course syllabi for the department, receiving class lists, instructions on what to do during self-study hours, organizing regular assessments and mid-term assessments, etc. Currently, most lecturers have been teaching according to the content and schedule in the course syllabi. Teaching according to course syllabi facilitates lecturers' proactive innovation in teaching methods, encourages students to self-study more, and encourages proactive communication with lecturers. However, currently, the implementation of credit-based training at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities still faces some difficulties such as: the academic advising team has not yet demonstrated its advisory role to students, causing students to be confused in choosing courses; students are weak in computer and network skills; the slow adjustment and issuance of training programs makes it difficult for students to understand the training program; Some lecturers are struggling with class management, especially in classes with a large number of students... The report also made several recommendations to the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU): there is a need for regulations and guidelines on how to organize and manage classes in a unified manner within VNU; improving and upgrading the software to effectively support training; promptly announcing changes to subjects, course durations, and teaching methods so that the university can proactively adjust the curriculum and organize the timetable for the academic year... Also at this conference, Professor Nguyen Huu Duc assessed: "The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is a proactive, positive, and leading unit in implementing credit-based training." Other units of VNU, to varying degrees, have implemented credit-based training for their respective training systems. Learning from each other's experiences and strengthening information exchange between units will help this activity throughout VNU to be implemented more quickly and effectively. The conference also heard and discussed two other reports: "Experiences in innovating training programs and scientific research at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu Van Boi - Head of the Department of Chemistry"; and "Developing and perfecting training programs for common subjects for training majors at Vietnam National University, Hanoi" presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Nha - Head of Training Department, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
