On October 30, 2009, a training conference with the participation of representatives of the leaders of member units, representatives of many departments and functional offices of VNU was held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc - Vice President of VNU - chaired the conference. The main discussion content of the conference focused on exchanging experiences in organizing credit-based training among units and in developing programs and organizing common subjects. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Quyet - Head of Training Department represented the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to present a report on the experience in organizing credit-based training of the University in the past time. The report stated that: up to the 2009-2010 school year, credit-based training has been applied to all regular training courses and the QH-2009 course of part-time study. In the stages of credit-based training, the timetable arrangement process is the key step. Based on the teaching schedule and the teaching staff, the faculties send the Training Department a list of expected subjects to be taught in the next semester. The Training Department arranges the timetable and sends it to the faculties to get feedback, completes it and publishes it on the website for students to choose from, then organizes for students to register for subjects. In the second semester of the 2008-2009 school year, the school organized nearly 600 classes for more than 200 subjects in various majors for students to register. In the first semester of this school year, the school organized about 800 classes, of which about 80 to 100 classes were for students to choose different study times. Regarding subject registration, in the first semester of this school year, the school has implemented the practice of allowing students to register for subjects via the Internet instead of registering on the intranet as before, making it much easier for students to register. Regarding the organization of teaching, there is a strict hierarchy between the training department and the academic affairs department of the faculties. All teachers participating in teaching are provided with a lecturer handbook, which clearly states the teaching procedures such as the date of receiving the teaching schedule, updating the subject outline for the department, receiving the subject class list, instructions on what to do during self-study hours, organizing regular assessments and mid-term assessments... Currently, a number of lecturers have taught closely following the content and schedule in the subject outline. Teaching according to the subject outline facilitates teachers to proactively innovate teaching methods, students have to study more on their own and actively communicate with teachers. However, currently, the implementation of credit-based training at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities also faces some difficulties such as: the academic advisor team has not been able to demonstrate their advisory role to students, so students are confused in choosing subjects; students are weak in computer and network skills; the slow adjustment and promulgation of training programs makes it difficult for students to understand the training program; Some lecturers are confused in managing classes, especially classes with many students... The report also made some recommendations to VNU: there should be regulations and guidelines on how to organize and manage unified subject classes in VNU; complete and upgrade software to effectively support training; promptly notify changes in subjects, subject duration and how to organize teaching of subjects so that the school can proactively adjust the program and organize the timetable of the school year... Also in this conference, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc assessed: "The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is a proactive, active and leading unit in implementing credit-based training". Other units of VNU, to a greater or lesser extent, have been implementing credit-based training for their training systems. Learning from each other's experiences and increasing information exchange between units will help this activity throughout VNU to be implemented more quickly and effectively. The conference also listened to and discussed two other reports: Experience in innovating training programs and scientific research at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Natural Sciences presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu Van Boi - Head of the Faculty of Chemistry; Building and perfecting training programs for common subjects for training majors of VNU presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Nha - Head of Training Department, VNU.
