1. Training objectives
The program aims to provide learners with fundamental knowledge of Vietnamese phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar. It trains learners in methods for teaching Vietnamese phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar, as well as methods for teaching Vietnamese listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It also trains learners in lesson planning, curriculum design, language program design (which may incorporate cultural elements), and designing exercises to correct errors made by native speakers.
2. Target audience for training
Vietnamese and foreigners who are qualified and willing to receive training and certification in Vietnamese Language Teaching Methods for Foreigners can become teachers.
3. Training duration
150 hours (10 credits)
4. Total course load
Total number of credits to be accumulated: 10 credits, including:
- Required course credit: 5.5 credits
- Elective course: 2 credits
- Internship: 2.5 credits
After completing the course, learners will have acquired the following knowledge:
- Learners acquire basic knowledge of Vietnamese phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar, and to a certain extent, can anticipate the difficulties learners may encounter regarding phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar due to the unique characteristics of the Vietnamese language.
- Learners will know how to convey knowledge about the Vietnamese language through lectures, language exercises, and cultural lessons. At the same time, learners will also grasp methods for designing lectures and exercises to teach Vietnamese to foreigners.
- Learners are aware of their role as teachers, conveying knowledge accurately, and using teaching methods appropriate to their audience.

7. Teaching and learning equipmentUtilizing modern classrooms and equipment, the course effectively meets the learning and teaching needs.
8. Teacher RequirementsThe instructors are experts in the field of language teaching in general and Vietnamese for foreigners in particular.
9. ImplementationThis is a non-intensive course. At the end of the course, students are assessed and awarded a certificate.
The evaluation method is as follows:
- Regular assessment based on in-class preparation as required by the teacher: 10 points, accounting for 10%
- Internship evaluation score: 40 points, accounting for 40%
- Assessment of the final written exam: 50 points, accounting for 50% of the total score.
The total score for all three categories is 100 points.
APPENDIX: COURSE SYLLABUS ACCORDING TO THE PROGRAM
1. Module 1: Vietnamese Phonetics and Methods of Teaching Vietnamese Phonetics
This module provides learners with fundamental knowledge of Vietnamese phonetics: characteristics of the Latin-based writing system, the presence of tones, the characteristics of a syllabic language, its structure consisting of an initial consonant, a medial vowel, a vowel or diphthong, a final consonant, and six tones.
This module also trains learners in methods for preparing phonetics exercises and skills for teaching phonetics to foreigners.
Content 1: Overview of Vietnamese phonetic characteristics
- Vietnamese spelling problems
- Characteristics of Vietnamese syllables (types of Vietnamese syllables)
- Characteristics and criteria for distinguishing between consonants and vowels.
- The system of initial consonants, medial consonants, vowels (single and diphthongs), final consonants, and 6 tones in Vietnamese.
Content 2: Methods and skills for teaching Vietnamese phonetics
- Skills in teaching Vietnamese tones
- Skills in teaching Vietnamese consonants
- Skills in teaching vowels
- Skills in teaching consonant clusters
- Teaching final sounds
Content 3: Some notes on phonetics and skills for correcting Vietnamese phonetic errors.
- Some notes on Vietnamese phonetics (phonetic standards, spelling, pronunciation, etc.)
- Some errors in the pronunciation of consonants (g, ng, nh, l, đ, ……), vowels (ê-e, ư – ơ, …), medial sounds, tones, final sounds, and some syllables.

2. Module 2: Vocabulary and Teaching Methods for Vietnamese Vocabulary
This module provides learners with fundamental knowledge of Vietnamese vocabulary – a monosyllabic language, analyzing the nature of words, the units of vocabulary represented by one syllable (simple words) or more than one syllable (compound words, reduplicated words), and the characteristics of Vietnamese word classes. This module also trains learners in methods for preparing vocabulary exercises and skills for teaching vocabulary to foreigners.
Content 1: Overview of the characteristics of Vietnamese vocabulary
Content 2: Methods and Skills for Teaching Vietnamese Vocabulary (Creatively and appropriately applying foreign language teaching methods from around the world to teaching Vietnamese vocabulary)
- Teaching Vietnamese vocabulary through pictures, games, etc.

3. Module 3: Vietnamese Grammar and Methods of Teaching Vietnamese Grammar

This module also trains learners in methods for preparing grammar exercises and skills for teaching Vietnamese grammar to foreigners.
Content 1: Overview of Vietnamese grammar
Content 2: Creatively and appropriately applying foreign language teaching methods from around the world to Vietnamese grammar teaching - Teaching grammar using communicative units (the ultimate goal is for learners to be able to communicate).

4. Module 4: Methods for designing lectures and exercises
This module provides learners with the principles of designing lessons, exercises, and the general structure of a lesson. It also trains learners in the skills of selecting topics, choosing vocabulary related to those topics and grammatical issues to include in the lesson, and constructing exercises for the chosen topics, vocabulary, and grammar.
Content 1: Skills in developing topics and structuring lesson plans according to the lesson content (topics, vocabulary, and grammar).
Content 2: Skills in selecting materials and allocating content according to level.
5. Module 5: Teaching Methods for Vietnamese Culture Through Language
This module provides learners with methods for integrating cultural issues into language lessons and trains them in the skills of preparing cultural and language-related lesson plans.
Content 1: A brief overview of the basic socio-cultural characteristics of Vietnam
Content 2: Skills in integrating cultural knowledge into language lessons
6. Module 6: Methods for compiling error correction exercises for students
This module provides learners with the concept of errors, error classification, and trains them in the skills of creating practice exercises to correct errors made by foreigners learning Vietnamese.

7. Module 7: Curriculum Design Skills
This module provides learners with the essential principles to master (paying due attention to study time, objectives, requirements, and the proficiency level of foreign learners) and the skills to select fundamental Vietnamese grammar, vocabulary, and other relevant topics in accordance with these principles.
Content 1: Basis for designing learning programs for students (short-term, long-term, specialized – non-specialized, age, gender, etc.)
Content 2: Discussion based on students' real-life experiences.
8. Module 8: Internship
This module helps learners develop practical classroom skills and problem-solving skills for common issues encountered during teaching.
Content 1: Preparing lectures based on the curriculum and preparing lectures designed by yourself.
Content 2: Compiling lectures on specific topics (newspapers, clips, jokes, books, travel, culture, history, religion, etc.)
Content 3: Practice teaching phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar.
Content 4: Practice teaching phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar integrated into listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
