11.1. Purpose and scope of the thesis

Research objective: To study and clarify the current state and trends of relations between the United States and Japan in 2021.But2025 in the fields of: politics - diplomacy, economics, securityButdefense… Based on that, assess the characteristics and role of this relationship and draw key policy implications for Vietnam.

Research subject: US-Japan relations (2021-2025).

11.2. Research methods:

The main theory employed in this thesis is Realism. This theory allows the thesis to clarify security interests, the logic of the balance of power, and the impact of regional structures (power distribution, threat identification, and strategic constraints) on the behavior and policy choices of the United States and Japan. Against this backdrop, the US-Japan relationship is approached primarily as an alliance aimed at ensuring security, maintaining position, and optimizing national interests in an increasingly competitive strategic environment. Following this theoretical orientation, the thesis employs research methods such as: analytical-synthetic methods; systems analysis methods; historical-logical methods; policy analysis methods; forecasting methods; and comparative methods.

11.3. Main results and conclusions

  • Key results

- This dissertation is one of the most in-depth and systematic studies in Vietnam on US relations.ButJapan in 2021ButBy 2025, this thesis contributes to filling a research gap on the dynamics of alliance relationships in the context of a changing regional and international order. Based on the application of international relations theories and the systematization of the concept of alliances, the thesis clarifies the factors affecting US relations.ButJapan, as well as the operating mechanisms of the alliance in the context of new strategic competition.

- Provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of US relations.ButJapan in the political sphereButdiplomacy, defenseButsecurity, economy, and emerging fields (AI, climate change, etc.). Through this, the study indicates that the alliance between the two countries is shifting from a traditional security model to a multi-sectoral strategic cooperation, clarifying the characteristics, achievements, limitations, and impacts of this relationship on the region, the world, and Vietnam.

- This study analyzes the current state and forecasts the development trends of US-Japan relations up to 2030, and proposes policy recommendations for Vietnam. These findings contribute to providing scientific arguments for research, teaching, and especially for Vietnam's foreign policy formulation in the context of increasing great power competition and regional restructuring.

  •  Conclude

          The research results show that US relationsButJapan, during the period 2021–2025, continues to be one of the most important strategic alliances in modern international relations, while also playing a prominent role in shaping the security architecture of the Indian Ocean region.ButPacific. Faced with the impact of great power competition, the rise of China, and non-traditional security challenges, the two countries have expanded cooperation from the security sector to economics, technology, energy, and supply chain security. However, the alliance still faces issues regarding shared responsibilities, strategic autonomy, and policy priorities. For Vietnam, the development of relations with the United States is a key factor.ButJapan has created opportunities for cooperation while simultaneously demanding the continued maintenance of an independent, self-reliant, and strategically balanced foreign policy to protect national interests amidst increasing international competition.

11.1. Thesis purpose and objectives

Thesis purpose: This study aims to clarify the current state and evolving trends of relations between the United States and Japan during the period 2021But2025 across political, diplomat, economic, security, and defense dimensions. Based on this analysis, it seeks to assess the characteristics and significance of this relationship and derive policy implications for Vietnam.

The main theoretical framework employed in this thesis is Realism. This theory enables the study to explain security interests, the logic of the balance of power, and the influence of regional structuresButincluding power distribution, threat perceptions, and strategic constraintsButon the behavior and policy choices of the United States and Japan. From this perspective, United StatesButJapan relations are primarily understood as an alliance designed to ensure security, maintain strategic positions, and maximize national interests within an increasingly competitive strategic environment. Consistent with this theoretical framework, the thesis utilizes the following research methods: analysis and synthesis, systems analysis, historicalButlogical analysis, policy analysis, forecasting, and comparative analysis.

- The thesis is one of the most comprehensive and systematic studies conducted in Vietnam on United States–Japan relations during the period 2021But2025, contributes to filling a research gap regarding the dynamics of alliance relations in the context of a changing regional and international order. By applying international relations theories and systematizing the concept of alliance, the thesis clarifies the factors shaping United States–Japan relations and explains the operating mechanisms of the alliance under conditions of accelerated strategic competition.

- This study provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of United States–Japan relations across key areas, including political and diplomatic relations, defense and security, economics, and emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and climate change. The findings indicate that the alliance between the two countries is evolving from a traditional security arrangement into a comprehensive strategic partnership. In doing so, the study clarifies the characteristics, achievements, limitations, and impacts of this relationship on the region, the international order, and Vietnam.

- This study not only analyzes the current state of United States–Japan relations but also forecasts their development trends through 2030 and proposes policy recommendations for Vietnam. These findings contribute to providing a scientific basis for research and teaching, and particularly for the formulation of Vietnam's foreign policy in the context of intensification great power competition and ongoing regional restructuring.

The findings indicate that United States–Japan relations during the period 2021–2025 continue to constitute one of the most important strategic alliances in modern international relations, playing a prominent role in shaping the security architecture of the Indo-Pacific region. In response to intensifying great power competition, the rise of China, and emerging non-traditional security challenges, the two countries have expanded their cooperation beyond security to include economics, technology, energy, and supply chain resilience. However, the alliance continues to face challenges related to burden-sharing, strategic autonomy, and shifts in policy priorities. For Vietnam, the development of United States–Japan relations creates both opportunities for cooperation and the need to maintain an independent, autonomous, and strategically balanced foreign policy in order to preserve national interests amid intensification international competition.
