Based on this, the strategy outlines five objectives to protect Canada's interests in the region over the next 5 to 10 years.
- In Chapter 2, the author assesses the impacts of Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy on ASEAN and Vietnam. Positively, it opens up many opportunities for trade and investment cooperation and supply chain recovery; promotes sustainable development; strengthens defense and security; emphasizes cooperation in combating climate change; and focuses on investing in human capital and people-to-people connectivity. Negatively, the Strategy has somewhat diminished ASEAN's central role; challenged trade due to increased competition and technical barriers; created a significant arms race; and caused divisions over the South China Sea and Taiwan. Furthermore, this chapter presents noteworthy multifaceted reactions from countries within and outside the region.
- In Chapter 3, the author presented some grounds regarding the existing strengths, objectives, interests, and perspectives of each ASEAN country, including Vietnam, in cooperating with Canada. Based on this, the author offered several proposals and recommendations across four pillars: Politics and diplomacy; Economy, trade, and investment; Defense and security; and Socio-cultural relations, to promote positive aspects and mitigate negative aspects in the relationship between the two sides.
