  1. Dissertation Title: A Study of the Phonetic System of the Ha Nhi Language in Vietnam (with Relation to the Ha Nhi Language in China)
  2. Specialization: Languages of Vietnamese Ethnic Minorities
  3. Code: 62 22 01 09
  4. Scientific supervisor: Prof. Dr. Tran Tri Doi
  5. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
- The analysis and description show that the syllables of the Ha Nhi language in Thu Lum have an open CV/T structure. Accordingly, the syllable has only three components: a consonant (C) as the initial sound, a vowel (V) as the vowel part, and a tone (T). Sometimes the syllable only contains a vowel and a tone (V/T).
- Through the application of the phonetic context method, it is shown that the Ha Nhi Thu Lum phonetic system has 27 consonant phonemes such as /p/, /ph/, /b/, /t/, /th/, /d/, /k/, /kh/, /ɡ/, /ts/, /tsh/, /ʣ/, /tɕ/, /tɕh/, /ʥ/, /m/, /n/, /ɲ/, /ŋ/, /l/, /lh/, /s/, /z/, /ɕ/, /j/, /x/, /ɣ/ performing initial sounds, and 14 vowel phonemes /i/, /iW/, /;/, /;W/, /a/, /aW/, /ɔ/, /ɔW/, /u/, /uW/, /ɯ/, /'W/, /ø/, /u\/ performing main sounds. Regarding tones, the Ha Nhi language in Thu Lum has a system of three contrasting tones according to pitch range: high (tone 2, denoted as 55) - medium (tone 1, denoted as 33 and tone 3, denoted as 31) and flat (tone 1, tone 2) - descending (tone 3).
- When comparing with the phonetic system of the Ha Nhi language in Dai Trai, it is observed that: the syllables of both Ha Nhi languages are open syllables; Regarding consonants, the Ha Nhi language in Thu Lum and the Ha Nhi language in Dai Trai differ in both the number of consonant units and the articulation position, with 27 equivalent phonemes playing the same role; Regarding vowels, both the Ha Nhi language in Thu Lum and the Ha Nhi language in Dai Trai lack mid-line vowels and both use the contrasting tense and non-tense (lax) features to identify vowel phonemes in their function. In the Ha Nhi language in Thu Lum, with 9 basic vowel units, the language has 14 functional vowel phonemes; while in the Ha Nhi language in Dai Trai, 10 basic vowel units create 20 single vowel phonemes in the language. In the tonal system of the Ha Nhi Thu Lum and Ha Nhi Dai Trai languages, if we exclude tone 4 (24), which only appears in words of Chinese origin in the Ha Nhi Dai Trai language, then the tones including tone 1 (33), tone 2 (55) and tone 3 (31) are basically the same in terms of pitch and features.
  1. Practical applications:
- The research findings of this thesis can provide extremely valuable materials for those working in ethnolinguistics in both Vietnam and China, enabling them to understand and develop theories on the influence of different linguistic contexts on different Ha Nhi dialects during language development.
- The research findings will have linguistic value in contributing to the preservation and development of the languages of ethnic minorities in Vietnam and China. At the same time, the research results of this thesis can also serve as a reference source in formulating language and ethnic culture policies in both Vietnam and China.
  1. Further research directions:
- We will continue our research and investigation of the Ha Nhi language in Vietnam.
- Simultaneously with data collection, experimental phonetic analysis can be used to describe the findings, along with the results presented through auditory perception.

  1. Official thesis title: Studying the phonetic system of Ha Nhi language in Vietnam (referred to Ha Nhi language in China)
  2. Major: Languages of Vietnam's Ethnic Minorities
9. Code: 62 22 01 09
10. Supervisors: Prof. Dr. TRAN TRI DOI
11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
- The analysis and description results show that the syllables of Ha Nhi language in Thu Lum Village have an open structure, CV/T. distorted, a syllable has only three components: the consonant (C) as the first sound, the vowel (V) as the rhyme, and the tone (T). Sometimes syllables only contain vowels and tones (V/T).
-Through practical fieldwork and phonemic extraction, we initially described the phonetic system of Ha Nhi Thu Lum as follows: there are 27 consonant phonemes such as /p/, /ph/, /b/, /t/, /th/, /d/, /k/, /kh/, /ɡ/, /ts/, /tsh/, /ʣ/, /tɕ/, /tɕh/, /ʥ/, /m/, /n/, /ɲ/, /ŋ/, /l/, /lh/, /s/, /z/, /ɕ/, /j/, /x/, /ɣ/, there are 15 vowel phonemes such as: /p/, /ph/, /b/, /t/, /th/, /d/, /k/, /kh/, /ɡ/, /ts/, /tsh/, /ʣ/, /tɕ/, /tɕh/, /ʥ/, /m/, /n/, /ɲ/, /ŋ/, /l/, /lh/, /s/, /z/, /ɕ/, /j/, /x/, /ɣ/, there are 14 vowel phonemes such as: /i/, /iW/, /;/, /;W/, /a/, /aW/, /ɔ/, /ɔW/, /u/, /uW/, /ɯ/, /'W/, /ø/, /u\/. As for tones, Ha Nhi language in Thu Lum Commune has a system of 03 opposing tones according to high pitch (tone 2, denoted as 55) - medium (tone 1, denoted as 33 and tone 3, denoted as 31) and the flat (tone 1, tone 2) - down (tone 3).
- When compared with the phonetic system in Ha Nhi Dai Trai language, it can be found that: the syllables of both Ha Nhi dialects are open syllables; Regarding consonants, the two languages have differences in both the number of consonants as well as the position of articulation, of which 27 phonemes are equivalent and play the same role; Regarding vowels, both dialects lack midline vowels and both use the contrast of tense and non-tense, lax to identify vowel phonemes in function. In Thu Lum dialect with 09 basic vowel units, the language has 15 functional vowel phonemes; In Dazhai language, 10 basic vowel units create 20 single vowel phonemes in linguistic activities. In the tone system of the two dialects, if we exclude tone 4 (24), which only appears in Chinese original words in Dazhai language, then the tones including tone 1 (33), tone 2 (55) and tone (31) corresponds essentially the same in both pitch and contour
  1. Practical applicability, if any:
- The research results of the thesis can provide very valuable materials for ethnic language workers in Vietnam and China to learn and develop theories about the influence of different linguistic situations on different Ha Nhi languages in the process of language development.
- The results of the research will have linguistic value in contributing to the preservation and development of ethnic minority languages in Vietnam as well as in China. At the same time, the research results of the thesis can also become a reference in the development of ethnic language and culture policies in Vietnam and China.
  1. Further research directions, if any:
- We will continue to investigate the study of Ha Nhi language in Vietnam.
- At the same time, along with the collection of data, it is possible to use experimental phonetic analyzes to describe along with the results that have been raised by auditory perception.
