11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
- Research objectives:
This study aims to survey, compare, and contrast to clarify the similarities and differences in the structure of discourse genres in English and Vietnamese scientific articles published in economics journals. Based on this, the study will offer suggestions for language teaching and research for undergraduate students, graduate students, doctoral candidates, young lecturers just starting their research careers, researchers aiming for international publication, higher education institutions, and domestic scientific journals.
- Research subjects:
The subject of this dissertation is the discourse genre structure in English and Vietnamese scientific articles published in domestic and international economics journals.
- Research methodology:
Genre analysis method
+ Comparison method
+ Descriptive method
+ Statistical techniques
- Key results and conclusions:
The study results indicate that both English and Vietnamese corpora utilize a relatively large number of actions and steps within the framework for analyzing the structure of scientific articles to achieve the purposes and functions of the texts. However, the actions and steps present in the English corpora are more prevalent, while the structure of Vietnamese articles tends to omit some important actions and steps that contribute to the success of a scientific article. Specifically, out of 23 actions and 45 steps in the framework for analyzing the structure of scientific articles, the English corpora utilize 21 actions and 30 steps, while the Vietnamese corpora utilizes 17 actions and 20 steps.
The thesis presents explanations from an educational perspective and international publishing experience to provide insightful perspectives on the differences in the discourse structure of English and Vietnamese scientific articles. Generally, the level of adherence to the discourse structure of scientific articles in the Vietnamese corpora has not been given sufficient attention; therefore, the thesis offers policy suggestions and practical recommendations for students, lecturers, researchers, higher education institutions, and specialized journals in Vietnam. Accordingly, higher education institutions should integrate the content of discourse structure of scientific articles into academic writing courses to equip students with standard knowledge of article structure. Furthermore, training in academic writing skills for lecturers, aimed at publishing articles in prestigious domestic and international journals, should be emphasized. For higher education institutions, to achieve standards in research and scientific publications, creative and critical thinking skills need to be nurtured and cultivated in generations of students. Finally, this study also offers recommendations for economic journals, as well as other specialized journals, on improving standards, regulations, and formats for the discourse structure of articles, thereby affirming the prestige and quality of journals both domestically and internationally.
- Novel contributions of the thesis:
In theory:
- This dissertation is one of the few comprehensive studies on the theoretical aspects of the genre structure of a complete article, as previous studies both domestically and internationally have only addressed the genre structure of one or a few components within the main text of the article.
- The dissertation also adds scientific arguments for domestic universities and academies in building the structure of discourse presentation for scientific articles, research reports, theses, and dissertations in economics according to international standards; it also provides scientific arguments on the standard genre structure of research articles for domestic specialized journals.
In practical terms:
- The research results are a valuable reference for students, graduate students, doctoral candidates, and young lecturers in economics and other fields, helping them access the standard structure of a scientific paper to guide their writing and publication in prestigious domestic and international journals.
- The research findings of this thesis will serve as a basis for specialized journals to refine their requirements for the structure of scientific articles according to international standards, thereby improving the quality of articles and increasing the chances of being indexed and ranked in prestigious global databases such as Scopus and Web of Science.
- This is the first study to compare the genre structure of English and Vietnamese scientific articles in the field of economics from a discourse perspective in Vietnam. Therefore, the practical recommendations derived from the research results are novel and make a significant contribution to discourse knowledge in the Vietnamese context.
12. Directions for further research:
The thesis offers several suggestions for future research directions as follows:
- Firstly, the application of the discourse analysis approach to scientific articles to other fields such as Linguistics, Literature, Information Technology, Education, Mathematics, Agriculture, Psychology, Law, etc., needs to be further expanded in the context of higher education institutions nationwide promoting international publications in all training disciplines to affirm their position in training and scientific research domestically and internationally.
Secondly, studies can also focus on comparing and contrasting the structure of discourse genres in interdisciplinary scientific papers to understand the similarities and differences between different fields of study, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive and holistic understanding of scientific discourse.
- Thirdly, the thesis also recommends conducting structural studies of other discourse genres in academic writing such as essays, dissertations, theses, textbooks, books, etc., in order to provide knowledge about discourse structure in these types of texts, serving the teaching of academic writing courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as for academic discourse research in Linguistics.

- Research methods:
Genre analysis method
+ Contrastive analysis method
+ Descriptive method
+ Descriptive statistics technique
- Major results and conclusion:
The results indicate that both English and Vietnamese corpora utilize a considerable number of moves and steps in the analytical framework of research article genre structure in order to perform communicative functions of the text. However, while there is high frequency of moves and steps in English corpus, Vietnamese corpus has the tendency to omit a certain number of important moves and steps which contribute to the success of the article. specifically, in 23 moves and 45 steps in the analytical framework, English corpus makes use of 21 moves and 30 steps while the typical articles in Vietnamese counterpart adopt 17 moves and 20 steps. From these findings, interpretations from the perspectives of education and international publication experiences have been presented in order to give insights into the differences in the genre structure of English and Vietnamese research articles.
