11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
1. By choosing to study the work "The Unmarried Woman's Wharf" from a discourse analysis perspective, this thesis has contributed to clarifying the characteristics of literary discourse and providing further evidence to affirm the usefulness of discourse analysis theory, demonstrating a trend in linguistic research.
Language studies should not be limited to the structural level but should be expanded to encompass the meaning and function of linguistic units (pragmatics) in specific communicative situations.2. The thesis applied discourse analysis theory to the study of the "Unmarried Woman's Wharf" discourse in terms of coherence, coherence, and linguistic scope.
From a cohesion perspective, the thesis has pointed out that, in addition to connecting the ideas and meanings of sentences, paragraphs, and sections within discourse, contributing to clarifying the coherence of discourse, these methods also create tightness, clarity, and concise expression, making the sentences lighter and creating a balanced rhythm.
From a coherent perspective, the thesis points out that "The Unmarried Woman's Wharf" is not simply a text with a series of related contents, but rather that these are interconnected and bound together by networks of relationships such as cause-and-effect relationships, temporal relationships, and the correspondence between linguistic actions.
From a linguistic perspective, the thesis identifies elements associated with situational context such as discourse field, discourse mode, and discourse atmosphere. Within this, each discourse field corresponds to a different discourse mode that reflects the relationships, communicative roles, and communicative attitudes between the characters (discourse atmosphere).
3. The research findings of this dissertation have provided a new approach, an approach from the perspective of discourse analysis, to the work "The Unmarried Woman's Wharf" in particular and literary discourse in general.
12. Practical applications:
- The research findings of this thesis will serve as a useful reference for analyzing a narrative text from a linguistic perspective.- The research findings of this dissertation can also be considered a useful reference for teaching and researching Vietnamese literary works during the Doi Moi (Renovation) period.
13. Future research directions:
1. Although discourse analysis theory opens up many avenues of analysis, this thesis only focuses on the aspects of coherence, cohesion, and context to study the discourse in "The Unmarried Woman's Wharf." Other aspects of discourse analysis, such as argumentation, dialogue, and relevance in the work, need further research.
2. When approaching the work from the perspective of coherence, the thesis has pointed out three dimensions of coherence (coherence through cause-and-effect relationships, coherence through temporal relationships, and coherence in the correspondence of linguistic actions), but many other manifestations of coherence have not been studied, such as: coherence in the relationship between topic and subject, coherence in the form of inferential reasoning, coherence in argumentative relationships, etc. This opens up directions for further research in subsequent studies.

Therefore, it shows that language research direction not only focuses on structural level but also expands to semantic and pragmatic ones in specific conversational situations.
2. The thesis applies discourse analysis theory to analyze “Husbandless wharf” from the cohesive, coherent and register levels.
From the cohesive level, the thesis highlights that the cohesive devices, apart from helping to connect the ideas and meanings of sentences, passages and parts of discourse to partially clarify the coherence of discourse, also establish tight connection clarity and agreement, which lightens the sentences and creates a harmony between them.
From the coherent level, the thesis shows that “Husbandless wharf” is not simply a literature work comprised of series of related contents. In fact, between them there exists a connection and restriction formed by cause-effect and chronological relationships and speech act.
From the level of register, the thesis depicts the factors connecting to situational contexts such as field of discourse, mode of discourse and tenor of discourse. In the analysis, every field of discourse is accompanied by a correspondent mode of discourse to establish the relationships, conversational, roles and attitude of the characters (tenor of discourse).

1. Although discourse analysis theory contains multiple analytical directions, the thesis only approaches “Husbandless wharf” from the levels of coherence, cohesion and registration. Several other levels such as argumentative, conversational, relevant, ... in the work will need further research.
2. Approaching the work form the level of coherence, the thesis highlights the 3 aspects of coherence (coherence through cause-effect relationship, coherence through chronological relationship and coherence through speech act. However, there still remain other aspects that are not yet researched, such as: coherence in the relationship between theme-topic, coherence through attributional inference, coherence through argumentative relationships. … This opens new approaches for futures research.
