11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
Research objectives:
From a historical perspective, this thesis reconstructs the picture of the formation and transformation of old apartment complexes in Hanoi from 1954 to 2000. Simultaneously, the thesis aims to clarify the evolution of these complexes in Hanoi through two segments: from 1956 to 1985 and from 1986 to 2000. From this, it analyzes some prominent characteristics regarding social lifestyles, culture, historical values, and draws some lessons on urban management and urban heritage management.
Research objectives:
- This study outlines the factors influencing the formation and transformation of residential complexes in Hanoi from 1954 to 2000, including the historical context; the Party and State's policies and guidelines on urban development in Hanoi; and other factors during the period from 1954 to 2000.
- To synthesize source materials to reconstruct a historical picture of the formation and transformation of apartment complexes in Hanoi in terms of planning, architecture, and social aspects through two periods: from 1954 to 1985 and from 1986 to 2000.
- Analyze the cultural, social, and historical factors associated with the formation and transformation of apartment complexes in Hanoi from 1954 to 2000.
- Drawing on historical experiences in managing, organizing, and preserving the values associated with Hanoi's collective housing areas, lessons can be applied to current urban management in Hanoi.
Research subjects:
The research subject of this study is the apartment complexes located within residential sub-districts built from 1954 to before 2000, examined from aspects of policy, planning, history, culture, and society.
Research methodology:
This dissertation is a topic within the field of Vietnamese History; therefore, the scientific research method of history is used as the main research method, examining and presenting the development and transformation of apartment complexes in Hanoi through factors such as architecture, planning, and cultural life... and presented in a chronological order, offering diverse perspectives and clarifying the relationships between the research subjects.
The logical method is used as a way to examine and study events directly related to residential areas in order to reveal the nature and laws of historical development. Unlike the historical method, the logical method does not delve into the entire sequence of events but only explores core issues that are interconnected. From specific issues, related issues can be logically inferred.
Comparative analysis is used when there is a complete data base, from numbers and tables related to housing issues and housing complexes, to scientifically assess the overall social landscape, helping to make judgments and observations to clarify and analyze the situation.
The historical periodization method used in this thesis specifically divides the development stages of collective housing in Hanoi along a continuous timeline, starting from 1954 with the appearance of the first experimental model of collective housing, up to 2000 when the term collective housing was no longer used, replaced by a system of urban areas and apartment buildings, specifically the Linh Dam urban area.
Besides the methods primarily associated with and closely related to historical research, this is also a highly interdisciplinary topic. While historical factors are dominant, other research disciplines are indispensable.
Statistical methods are one of the interdisciplinary approaches used when collecting comprehensive databases. This involves synthesizing data from primary sources, secondary sources, or information obtained through direct interviews or observations.
Contributions of the thesis:
- This dissertation contributes to providing a comprehensive and complete view of the emergence and transformation of collective housing areas in Hanoi from 1954 to 2000 in terms of planning, architecture, construction, residential structure, ownership, and functional use.
