1. History of formation
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU Hanoi) is one of the leading centers for anthropology research and training in Vietnam.
With a long-standing tradition, built and developed on the foundation of the Department of Ethnology within the Faculty of History of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the history of the Faculty of Anthropology has undergone many important stages of development:

  • 1960: The Ethnology Department was established within the Faculty of History, Hanoi University.
  • 1967: The Department of Ethnology was established within the Faculty of History, Hanoi University.
  • 2004: The Department of Ethnology was renamed the Department of Anthropology, under the Faculty of History, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
  • 2010: The Department of Anthropology was established under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
  • 2015: The Faculty of Anthropology was established within the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

After more than half a century of establishment and development, the Faculty of Anthropology is now the only higher education institution in Vietnam that systematically trains students in Anthropology from undergraduate to master's and doctoral levels.
2. Mission
To become one of the leading anthropology centers in Vietnam and the region, harmoniously combining theory and practice, qualitative and quantitative methods, basic and applied research, and training professional anthropologists with high professional qualifications and social prestige.
