1. History of formation

In 1996, on the basis of the Linguistics Department of the Faculty of Philology, Hanoi University of Science (1956-1996), the Linguistics Department of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi was established. The Department is the first unit in Vietnam to train Linguistics as a separate science. The functions and tasks of the Linguistics Department are to train high-quality human resources in linguistics, Vietnamese linguistics, Vietnamese language and culture, and languages ​​of ethnic groups in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
With the 60-year tradition of the Faculty of Literature in the past and the 20-year tradition of the Faculty of Linguistics today, the Faculty of Linguistics has affirmed its position and importance as one of the leading basic science faculties of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities as well as its role in training in linguistics and Vietnamese in the university education system of Vietnam.

2. Mission

The Faculty of Linguistics is one of the oldest faculties of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, with leading prestige nationwide in the field of research and training of human resources in the field of Linguistics.
The Faculty of Linguistics has the mission of training high-quality human resources, promoting the passion for research on linguistics, languages ​​and cultures of ethnic groups in Vietnam, applied linguistics (sign language, school language, medical linguistics, philological linguistics, sign language...), Vietnamese linguistics, comparative linguistics, Vietnamese linguistics for foreigners..., contributing to promoting exchanges and relations between Vietnam and countries around the world.

3. Outstanding achievements

Over the past 60 years, the Faculty of Linguistics has trained about 25,000 Vietnamese and international students, graduate students, postgraduates and interns. The number of international students and trainees studying at the Faculty of Linguistics has always been the leading one at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU. Many of the Vietnamese students, trainees and postgraduates have become senior leaders of the Party, State and social organizations of Vietnam after graduation. Many international students, graduate students and postgraduates have held and are holding key positions in state agencies, research and educational institutions of the host country. The Faculty also regularly sends lecturers to teach and conduct research exchanges at universities and research institutes in dozens of countries on all continents of the world.
In the last 5 years of enrollment (2018-2023), the entrance scores of students majoring in Linguistics have always been among the highest at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU. The reason for this strength is that the Faculty has a team of lecturers who are professors, associate professors, and doctors with rich experience, dynamism, and professionalism in training and scientific research. The Faculty has developed many training programs for all three levels (bachelor, master, and doctorate) that meet regional and international standards. The rate of Linguistics students with jobs suitable for their training majors is always over 90%.
For its outstanding achievements in training and scientific research, the Faculty of Linguistics was awarded the Third Class Labor Medal (2001) and the Second Class Labor Medal (2006) by the State. Many staff of the Faculty have also received noble awards and titles: 01 Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology (Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tai Can), 05 State Prizes for Science and Technology (Associate Professor Phan Ngoc, Associate Professor Nguyen Kim Than, Prof. Dr. Hoang Thi Chau, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Giap, Prof. Dr. Doan Thien Thuat).

4. Development orientation

  • Expanding the research and teaching areas of Linguistics towards applied and interdisciplinary orientation.
  • Strengthen and modernize traditional areas.
  • Strengthen international activities, from international cooperation to international publication.
  • Build a number of new specialized directions in the direction of application, practically serving social needs.
