The Group of Gender, Population and Environmental Studies (VNU) was established in 2010 (then called the Group of Family, Gender and Social Work Studies (USSH, VNU). The group was established on the basis of a number of members of the Department of Family and Gender Sociology, Faculty of Sociology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU (VNU-USSH). By 2023, the group changed its name to the Group of Gender, Population and Environmental Studies, under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
In 2017, the Research Group was recognized as a Strong Research Group (NCM) of VNU. With its research values and international publications contributing to VNU's scientific and technological achievements, by 2023, the Gender, Population and Environment Research Group led by Prof. Dr. Hoang Ba Thinh will continue to be recognized as a VNU-level NCM Group for the period 2023 - 2025.
This is a recognition of scientific achievements in the field of Gender, Population and Environment research - one of the strengths of scientists at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, contributing to affirming the mission of VNU-USSH as a pioneer in training high-quality, highly qualified human resources; researching, creating and disseminating knowledge about Social Sciences and Humanities, serving the cause of national construction, protection and international integration.

Prof. Dr. Hoang Ba Thinh - Head of the Research Group was appointed by the President of VNU as a member of the Science and Training Council, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (Decision No. 3312/QD-VNU dated August 29, 2017); Vice Chairman of the Interdisciplinary Council of Political Sciences and Management for the 2012 - 2017 term; Member of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Council, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (Decision No. 4692/QD-VNU dated December 7, 2017). As Head of the Research Group, Professor Hoang Ba Thinh proposed and chaired the development of 03 National-level Science and Technology Project Explanations; chaired many scientific topics at the Ministry level, National University level, and city level. The basic contents from some recommendations and advice of Professor, Doctor, Meritorious Service Hoang Ba Thinh on Gender, Family, Population and Environment for economic, cultural and social development have been accepted by the Party, the State and the Vietnam Women's Union, and are an important basis for amending the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention.
In 2010, Prof. Dr. Hoang Ba Thinh founded the group with the core being lecturers from universities as well as young cadres studying, researching, and working at research institutes and scientific management agencies at home and abroad. During the training and self-training process, many members of the group can use 2 or 3 foreign languages in communication and research. All key members have had the opportunity to study (Master's, PhD) or exchange science, research, and teaching abroad: USA, Australia, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, etc. In recent years, the number of PhD students trained by the group leader is 15 people (10 people have successfully defended their doctoral theses), the number of masters trained is 40 people (38 people have successfully defended their master's theses).

In particular, the Research Group has cooperated with many domestic and international researchers. Along with the members and key members, the Gender, Population and Environment Research Group also has the participation and advice of: Prof. Dr. Trinh Duy Luan (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences); Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Tan (Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics), Prof. Dr. Hong Jin Wang (National DongHwa University), Prof. Dr. Peter Kang (Cheng Kung University, Taiwan),... Experts and scientific advisors have actively supported the research, training, publishing, strengthening international cooperation and the development of the Group.
Prof. Dr. Hoang Ba Thinh and key members of the Group are currently presiding over scientific topics and tasks at the State, Ministry and Hanoi National University levels. Notably, the task of proposing and being responsible for developing the Explanation and successfully bidding for 02 State-level S&T topics: 1) Urbanization and management of urbanization process in sustainable development of the Central Highlands; State-level Science and Technology Topic, Code TN3/X15 - Project Manager, 2013-2015; and 2) Impact of urbanization on rural development in the period 2011-2020; Independent State-level Science and Technology Topic; Code DTĐL.2010T/38 - Project Manager, 2010-2012.
In addition, some members of the group have successfully bid for a number of science and technology topics at all levels, reaching a rate of 50 million VND/person/year, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thai Lan (Head): The impact of the Internet on the relationship between parents and children in high school age. Topics of the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED)... The members of the group have participated in many science topics at all levels, are scientific secretaries, main members of a number of science topics at the state, ministerial level, National University level, Nafosted; are heads of many basic level science topics...
As a strong research group at VNU, in the next 3 years, the Gender, Population and Environment Research Group will focus on the following key research directions:
1. Research issues of family change in Vietnam, barriers in the process of achieving gender equality goals.
2. Research on population change, population structure and quality in social development. The impacts of population aging and low fertility on economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects.
3. Research on social security system and social welfare policies towards sustainable development goals.
4. Research the role of social work in assisting disadvantaged groups. Especially issues related to mental health, stress, bullying and school violence.
The above research orientations contribute to a more complete and comprehensive understanding of Vietnam's economic, cultural and social history. These research orientations will also contribute to preparing arguments and scientific bases for developing recommendations, advisory reports, and policies related to family, gender, population, environment and social work.
At the same time, in the 3-year period of 2023 - 2025, the top priority of the Research Group is to focus on implementing the Construction of the National Geographical Set of Vietnam - a special National Science and Technology Task, Social Volume; Completing the topic of the Nafosted Foundation, an international cooperation project with Donghua University (Taiwan) on fertility change.
In recent years, the Group has published many domestic and international scientific works (in English and some international languages) in the fields of family, gender, population, environment, social work...[TĐMQK1] in prestigious specialized scientific journals in the country.
In the past 3 years, the Group has published many works on family, gender, environment, social security, social work...[TĐMQK2] in prestigious domestic specialized scientific journals, including journals in groups Q1, Q2 in the ISI/Scpus list.
In the past 3 years, the NCM Group has implemented at least 01 joint research and development project with domestic/international partners, which is an international project with National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan with the theme "Environmental pollution problems and prevention and protection solutions" (2020) and the International Scientific Conference "Research methods in social sciences: Theory and practical experience" (2022). In addition, the group is implementing an international project on "Social protection policies in agriculture and the rights of female agricultural and rural workers" in cooperation with PANAP.
The Gender, Population and Environment Research Group has affirmed its leading position in the field of social sciences and humanities, researching gender, population, environment and combining research, training with publishing research results. The achievements of the Research Group have contributed to realizing the vision to 2035 of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, which is to promote the strengths of a basic science university, focus resources on building VNU-USSH into a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research university with a team of excellent and leading experts; develop a number of new training majors and specialties, pioneering a core role in training and researching basic sciences of the country to reach regional and international levels; ranked in the top 100 universities in Asia and the top 500 universities in the world.
