Peer evaluation of the quality of the Han Nom Studies program

On October 28th and 29th, 2019, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities welcomed a delegation of experts from Vietnam National University, Hanoi to conduct a peer review of the Bachelor of Sino-Vietnamese Studies program according to Vietnam National University, Hanoi standards, with an AUN-QA orientation. The expert delegation included Dr. Tran Thi Hoai (Head of the delegation), Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Lan (member), and Dr. Mai Thi Quynh Lan (secretary).

Peer evaluation of the quality of the Han Nom Studies program

The opening ceremony of the evaluation program was attended by Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University); Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa (Vice Rector of the University), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Xuan Thach (Head of the Faculty of Literature) along with representatives of the leadership of relevant functional units and the entire faculty of the Faculty of Literature.

Professor Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University) delivered the opening remarks and emphasized: "The goal of evaluating the quality of training programs is to identify strengths and weaknesses, in order to find appropriate solutions for the development of each unit in particular and the entire University in general."

Dr. Tran Thi Hoai – Head of the Expert Team – highly appreciated the attention and guidance of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities leadership in ensuring the quality of training in general; and the quality accreditation and peer review work in particular. The Faculty of Literature has two training programs: Literature and Han Nom Studies. The University has already completed the accreditation process for the Literature program.AUN – QAAnd the Sino-Vietnamese Studies program is currently undergoing peer review.Dr. Tran Thi Hoai stated that the role and responsibility of the expert team is to collaborate with the Faculty of Literature in identifying issues according to quality assessment standards. All parties work in a spirit of frankness, openness, and high responsibility.

Associate Professor Pham Xuan Thach - Head of the Faculty of Literature, emphasized two key tasks regarding quality assurance that the Faculty has set: in 2017, the Faculty's Literature program underwent quality accreditation according to the AUN-QA standards, and this year, the Faculty's Han Nom program is undergoing peer evaluation. These are two training programs belonging to the basic science group of the Faculty in particular and the University in general. Accreditation and evaluation of training quality are recognized by all faculty members as an extremely necessary and effective task. Through these accreditation and evaluation rounds, the Faculty can review all aspects related to training activities and, consequently, better meet the demands of society for the Faculty's training programs.

Dr. Dinh Thanh Hieu - Deputy Head of the Faculty of Literature - presented a summary report on the Bachelor's program in Sino-Vietnamese Studies, clearly outlining the strengths and weaknesses identified by the Faculty. Dr. Hieu emphasized that nearly a year after the establishment of the Sino-Vietnamese Studies Self-Assessment Council in March 2019, with the efforts of the Faculty staff, the steps of the peer review process for Sino-Vietnamese Studies have been completed. Dr. Hieu affirmed that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, is one of the two largest Sino-Vietnamese Studies training and research institutions in Vietnam, and the University is also the only institution offering Sino-Vietnamese Studies programs at all three levels: bachelor, master, and doctoral.

Next, the expert team carried out the following activities: reviewing supporting documents; interviewing key members of the Faculty including the Faculty Leadership Board, Heads of Departments and other relevant parties; inspecting training facilities such as the Faculty Office, classrooms, documentation rooms, and laboratories…
