VNU continues to be in the 801-1000 group of the 2021 Times Higher Education world university rankings

On September 2, 2020, Times Higher Education (THE) announced the latest World University Rankings (WUR 2021). Accordingly, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) and 2 Vietnamese higher education institutions were ranked by THE along with 1,527 leading higher education institutions in the world. According to the ranking results report, VNU is in the 801-1000 group in the world; Ho Chi Minh City National University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology are in the 1001+ group. Thus, VNU is the only higher education institution in Vietnam in the top 1,000 universities in the world of this Ranking.

VNU continues to be in the 801-1000 group of the 2021 Times Higher Education world university rankings

Times Higher Education (THE) evaluates universities globally based on research into the core missions of a university, according to a set of standard measurement indicators to provide comprehensive and fair comparisons. Therefore, THE is trusted by students, scholars, higher education institutions, governments and academics. Based on the scientific database SCOPUS (by Elsevier Publishing), independent surveys and university data, THE's scoring and data processing are supervised by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), an independent, professional auditing organization.

The criteria for the 2021 World University Rankings remain the same as the 2020 rankings, according to 5 performance criteria groups including:

1. Teaching (learning environment) with a ranking weight of 30%

2. Research (volume, income and reputation) with a weight of 30%

3. Scientific citations (research influence) with a weight of 30%

4. International outlook (of staff, students and research) with a weight of 7.5%

5. Income from knowledge and technology transfer with a weight of 2.5%

With a strategy of continuously improving the quality of teaching and scientific research, aiming at the philosophy of sustainable development, the influence and position of VNU in the THE 2021 rankings have had positive changes. Accordingly, the evaluation scores in all ranking indicators of VNU have increased. In particular, the Research index increased by 8.8%, the Citation index increased by 8%. In addition, the Teaching index increased by 2.3%, and the income from scientific research and transfer (Industry Income) increased by 1.6%. The total ranking score of VNU increased from 24.86 to 26.24 (up 5.5%).

Compared to Vietnamese educational institutions in THE's 2021 World University Rankings, VNU-Hanoi has 4 out of 5 highest indicators. Meanwhile, VNU-HCM has the highest index of income from scientific research and knowledge transfer.

According to the results of THE World University Rankings 2021, the top 5 universities in the world are Oxford University, Stanford, Harvard, California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In Asia, top schools include Tsinghua University, Peking University of China, and the National University of Singapore.

In the Southeast Asian region, Thailand has 17 schools in the top 1001+, Malaysia has 15 schools, Indonesia has 9 schools, Singapore has 2 schools, Brunei has 1 school. Schools in the region with rankings equivalent to VNU (group 801-1000) include: King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (ranked 2nd in Thailand), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) (ranked 4th in Malaysia).

In addition to continuing to be in the 801-1000 group of THE World University Rankings – WUR 2021, VNU is also in the 801-1000 group for 3 consecutive rankings (2019 - 2021) in the QS World University Rankings. In addition, VNU is also for the first time in the 101-150 group in the QS Top 50 Under 50 Rankings 2021.

VNU has the following majors: Physical Sciences in the 601-800 group, Engineering and Technology in the 401-500 group of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
