Multidisciplinary approach is the new need in historical research
Since the 1970s, world historians have continuously expanded their subjects, approaches and methods of historical research, such as global history, transnational history, international history, military history, colonial history and decolonization, gender history, environmental history, etc. Historiography has continuously expanded its research areas by combining with other fields of social sciences and humanities such as political science, international relations, anthropology or sociology... In that trend, historians and international relations researchers of Vietnam and France have also continuously innovated, absorbing new research achievements, especially new theories, approaches and research methods to serve the development of the field of history and international relations research in the two countries.

Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang (VNU) co-chaired the discussion session with the topic "War and Peace in Vietnam"
Dr. Nguyen Thi Thin (Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam) and Prof. Jérémy Jammes (Sciences Po Lyon/Lyon Institute of Political Science), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU) chaired the plenary session.
The presentations at the conference with diverse perspectives have extensively researched many aspects of historical research and international relations, such as the topics: "Contributions of the French and Western academic world to 20th-century Vietnamese archaeology by Prof. Dr. Lam Thi My Dung, Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU); "Inter- and transnational approaches in comparative historical research of the decolonization movement in Indonesia and Vietnam" by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Duong Van Quang, MSc. Vuong Thi Thanh Thuy, MSc. Pham Thi Thanh Huyen (Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam); "History from science and technology: a way of interpreting and researching history" by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Manh Dung, PhD. Tran Xuan Thanh (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU) and MA. Do Thi Thu Ha (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences); “Is there compassion in international relations?” by Prof. Dr. Frédéric Ramel (Sciences Po Paris, Centre de recherches internationals); “Societies made invisible in international relations” by Prof. Dr. Jérémy Jammes (Sciences Po Lyon); “French cultural diplomacy in search of a new perception of Asia” by PhD. Cathy Monarque, Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3…
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim emphasized that the 20th century witnessed a globalization process in many scientific fields, especially social sciences and humanities, interdisciplinary research (NCLN) became a need and attribute of most scientific fields. NCLN aims at a new organizational mindset, a way of applying new theories, approaches, and research methods in close cooperation between scientists and fields of study. Placing the research object in the whole, at the same time solving multidimensional relationships in a comprehensive system, will certainly create new scientific perceptions and results.
Currently, it is difficult to consider the development of natural sciences as a “revolution” in the history of science, technology and innovation, education and culture, etc., but the presence of this field of study will contribute to promoting the need to restructure the system of science, technology and innovation organizations to truly become a direct productive force, creating momentum for the growth of the knowledge economy, the development of the economy - society, culture, the country and the national innovation system.
