- Could you please tell us about the necessity of establishing the High School for Social Sciences and Humanities?
The Project on Developing the System of Specialized High Schools for the 2010-2020 Period issued together with Decision No. 959/QD-TTg dated June 24, 2010 of the Prime Minister clearly stated the position and role of specialized high schools as "Model of high schools in terms of facilities, teaching staff and organization of educational activities”.
Resolution No. 29-NQ/TW dated November 4, 2013 of the 8th Conference of the Central Executive Committee of the Party (11th tenure) on fundamental and comprehensive innovation of education and training to meet the requirements of industrialization and modernization in the conditions of a socialist-oriented market economy and international integration has determined the guiding viewpoint of the Party and State as follows:Developing education and training to improve people's knowledge, train human resources, and foster talents; strongly shifting the educational process from mainly equipping knowledge to comprehensively developing learners' capacity and qualities; learning goes hand in hand with practice, theory is linked to reality; school education is combined with family education and social education.. Among the solutions proposed to fundamentally and comprehensively innovate education and training, Resolution No. 29-NQ/TW emphasizes: “Encourage socialization to invest in building and developing high-quality schools at all levels of education and training"and students“High school must provide access to high-quality post-secondary education and career preparation.”
Thus, the participation of universities in the process of nurturing and developing gifted students at high school level is really necessary, contributing to improving the quality of high school education while promoting the advantages of human resources, finance and available facilities of universities.
-Dear Associate Professor, besides the Government's policy, the establishment of the High School for Social Sciences and Humanities must also come from practical needs?
The specialized high school system in Vietnam includes 2 types:Specialized high school affiliated with university(formerly national specialized high schools) and provincial specialized high schools. Among the 83 specialized high schools nationwide, there are 08 specialized high schools in universities.
However, among the specialized high schools affiliated with universities, there is not a single specialized high school that is specifically oriented to creating resources for the field of social sciences and humanities. Even the specialized classes oriented towards social sciences and humanities such as Literature, History, and Geography in specialized high schools have significantly narrowed in size compared to about 5 years ago. In addition, students who won national excellent student awards from Literature, History, and Geography classes rarely continue to choose these majors at university level. Therefore, connecting high school training with university level to create a high-quality source of students for social sciences and humanities, especially basic sciences, is one of the issues facing universities and colleges that train in social sciences and humanities.
From that reality, we must also share that we have wanted to build a school specializing in Social Sciences and Humanities for a long time and now this has become a reality. This is the joy and expectation of many teachers of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities when welcoming a new member of the School.
- Can you give some assessments on the input quality of current undergraduate training programs in Social Sciences and Humanities?
For many years, the quantity and quality of input for university training in social sciences and humanities has been unstable, especially for basic sciences in the field of social sciences and humanities. Therefore, training high school students specializing in social sciences and humanities is a positive solution to contribute to improving the quality and increasing the number of university entrance candidates. It also helps us to be proactive in career orientation for high school students to improve the quality of input for social sciences and humanities.
- So what is the goal of the Specialized High School?Social Sciences and HumanitiesWhat is the direction, Professor?
As a public school, our goal is to equip students with solid general science knowledge, meeting all requirements and assessment criteria of the Ministry of Education and Training. In addition, we aim to build the school into a high-quality educational high school, a comprehensive educational environment, meeting national standards, approaching regional and international levels. - Currently, VNU has the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences under the University of Natural Sciences; the High School for Gifted Students in Foreign Languages under the University of Foreign Languages; and the High School for Educational Sciences under the University of Education. In preparation for the Project to establish the High School for the Gifted in Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has mobilized investment resources for items such as initial human resources, facilities and classroom equipment, promotional activities and enrollment...
During the period 2020-2025, the High School for the Gifted in Social Sciences and Humanities will use the facilities on the campus of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, including: Council room, Board of Directors room, lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, playgrounds, community living areas as well as corresponding technical infrastructure systems to serve training.
Then, along with the investment roadmap for the construction of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hoa Lac, VNU will submit to the competent authority to adjust the planning, arrange the location and area to ensure compliance with current regulations and mobilize financial resources to build the University's facilities located on the campus of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU in Hoa Lac.
The school will use highly qualified and experienced lecturers from units in the University of Social Sciences and Humanities such as: Faculty of History, Faculty of Literature, Faculty of Linguistics, Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Information - Library, Faculty of Psychology...

For specialized high schools in VNU, the University will certainly build a close cooperative relationship with these units, with activities such as: exchanging experiences and cooperating in implementing advanced teaching and assessment methods; coordinating the organization of national excellent student competitions and excellent student competitions at VNU; professional exchange and discussion activities for teachers and students; organizing the teaching of subjects in the high school program of specialized high schools of the Natural Science Specialized High School and the Foreign Language Specialized High School. In the period of 2020-2025, the partner schools have assigned 16 teachers to participate in teaching some non-specialized subjects in the program.
For other units under VNU, based on the functions and tasks of the units under VNU, in accordance with each specific task, the High School will implement a mechanism of interconnection and coordination in management and teaching.
