"Moments of silence within me"

For me, humanism is found in those sudden moments of silence…

After school, I would sit quietly on a park bench under the trees, observing and reflecting. I watched the stream of people passing by in the schoolyard, thousands of students being trained together under one roof, a small school steeped in humanistic values. Why am I sitting here, and where does humanistic values stand within me?

The sunshine of the Faculty of Humanities is sometimes a rosy glow overflowing with love, the first time I stepped onto the campus, the initial bewilderment during exams, the initial enrollment followed by the warm, enthusiastic smiles of the volunteer students during exam season. It's the sunshine in the paintings from the humanities exhibitions, the photovoice projects, the islands, clean water, women and children… and also the sunshine of the freshman orientation, the rosy sunshine of the Faculty of Humanities. Through these lenses, I see the profound humanistic nature of this school, gaining a deeper understanding of people and society.

Sometimes, the Faculty of Humanities radiates a green hue – the green of volunteer uniforms, the green of Humanities in activities such as cleaning lecture halls, computer labs, pedestrian bridges, school gates, whitewashing tree trunks, etc. These incredibly meaningful activities are initiated by the Youth Union and Student Association, and actively and effectively implemented by the various student branches. I feel even more attached to the Faculty of Humanities when I personally participate in these activities; although tiring, they are enjoyable and meaningful.

There are times when I suddenly stop in front of the bulletin board, carefully reading each piece of paper – messages, thoughts, and information shared by someone or a club. Sometimes, just the small joys spread by the owner of those notes make me smile. Other times, I learn about the start dates of foreign language classes, recruitment information, achievements, and activities of clubs… And then there are times when I'm walking across the schoolyard and suddenly stop, watching a group of friends practicing dance moves, watching them go about their business and laugh together, watching the chickens running and jumping around in the schoolyard…

For me, the Humanities sometimes means sitting in a lecture hall, absentmindedly looking out the window and reflecting on my responsibilities, my duties, and my future. What have I learned while sitting here? What has the Humanities given me, and what have I contributed to it? Knowledge, life, and passion?

As a first-year student, my feelings aren't deep enough to fully express my understanding of humanities, but I'm happy to be immersed in the world of humanities!
