Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam spoke about the role of social sciences and humanities in the development of the country.
Before a large audience of scientists, educators, and students of the University, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam delivered a speech conveying a simple yet meaningful message about the role of social sciences and humanities in the development of society and the country; as well as what the younger generation of the University needs to do to promote positive humanistic values in life.
The Deputy Prime Minister said: Our country is experiencing rapid and comprehensive development, which is highly appreciated by the international community. However, we must still face the truth that our country is still poor. This motivates us to implement stronger and more comprehensive reforms to accelerate national development.
However, a nation's development is not measured solely by economic growth rate or average income. To unleash all resources for growth, the role of the social sciences and humanities is extremely important and indispensable. This is because the social sciences and humanities help preserve and enrich the invaluable cultural values that our ancestors have bequeathed to us – values that have shaped a heroic and humane Vietnamese nation.
Sharing his vision for Vietnam's future development, the Deputy Prime Minister stated: "Vietnam must definitely become richer and stronger. But more importantly, Vietnam must be independent and peaceful. Vietnamese people must live in a safe, cultured, and humane society."
However, the social sciences and humanities are not only related to history, not only to philosophies and monumental research projects, but also to humanistic values manifested in the simple things that happen around us every day. These are simply the glances, smiles, and kind gestures that each person gives to those around them.
The Deputy Prime Minister said: "I think that every person possesses very valuable qualities, and the most meaningful thing that I and you need to do is to overcome ourselves - so that the good things within ourselves and in society can be multiplied, and so that the negative things are restrained, prevented, and pushed back by those good things."
