Associate Professor, Meritorious Service Le Duc Niem was born on February 5, 1932 (the date of his personal history is February 5, 1934), in a family with a revolutionary tradition in Nam Cuong commune, Nam Dan district, Nghe An province. Since he was young, due to his early enlightenment, he left his family to follow the revolution. At first, he participated in local revolutionary propaganda movements, was introduced to the Young Pioneers and was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Young Pioneers of the commune. After the national resistance war, he continued to go to school and participate in the resistance war in his hometown. When peace was restored, from his hometown Nghe An, he went to Hanoi and was introduced to study at the Film Interpretation Class. In April 1956, he became an officer of the Vietnam National Cinema Enterprise, under the Ministry of Culture. In October 1956, he was sent to study at Hanoi University. After graduating from university, from November 1959, he was retained at the school as a lecturer at the Faculty of Philology, responsible for teaching and researching Chinese literature. He was admitted to the Vietnam Workers' Party (now the Communist Party of Vietnam) on January 9, 1963.

Due to the need for professional development, from October 1963, he was sent to study classical Chinese literature at Beijing University. Here, he had the opportunity to meet and get acquainted with famous Chinese scholars such as Vuong Luc, Vien Hanh Bai (famous researchers on classical Chinese poetry and poetry)... Those were the days when he studied hard, nurturing the ambition of becoming an expert in researching and teaching Tang poetry in particular and Chinese literature in general. In July 1966, after completing the study program, he returned to Vietnam to continue working at the Faculty of Literature, Hanoi National University. From the very first days of his return, he devoted himself to working with the staff of the Foreign Literature Department to develop the program and compile lectures to quickly introduce to Vietnamese students the monumental works of great literatures in the world. Students of all generations still pass on to each other the enthusiasm and passion for literature of Mr. Le Duc Niem through his lectures onBook of Poetry,Qu Yuan, Li Bai, Du Fu… Thousands of graduates who are now working all over the country still remember his majestic and reciting voice during his passionate lectures in the evacuated mountainous areas of Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen province, as well as in his lectures in Hanoi. Almost no difficulty, not even the roar of bombs and bullets, could drown out his deep, warm, humane voice. His enthusiasm, his selfless heart, and his love for his students have entered the hearts of many generations of students of the Faculty of Literature.
Meritorious Teacher Le Duc Niem is a learned teacher. He is not only knowledgeable about Chinese literature, but also well-versed in Vietnamese literature, especially the poetry of President Ho Chi Minh. His books on Tang poetry in particular and Chinese literature in general always have some connection with Vietnamese literature; for example:Tang Poetry(Social Sciences Publishing House, Hanoi, 1994),The Appearance of Tang Poetry(VHTT Publishing House, H.1995),Poet Li Bai(Literature Publishing House, H.1995). He was the one who laid the foundation for teaching and researching Chinese literature in close relationship with Vietnamese literature at the Faculty of Literature, Hanoi University of Science. Associate Professor Le Duc Niem is also a translator and lexicographer. During his time working, in addition to writing monographs to promptly meet the training needs of the School, he also diligently compiled dictionaries; for example:Japanese - Vietnamese Dictionary(combined, Education Publishing House, H.1993),Chinese - Vietnamese Dictionary(VHTT Publishing House, H.1999),Chinese - Vietnamese Dictionary(combined, Social Sciences Publishing House, Hanoi, 1993),Dictionary of literature(compiled together, volume 1, H.1983 and volume 2, H.1984)... He is also the translator of the seriesHistory of Chinese Literature(2 volumes, joint translation, University & Vocational College Publishing House, Hanoi, 1990; reprinted, Education Publishing House, Hanoi, 1997), is the person who introduces the works of great authors in Chinese literature, such asRomance of the Three Kingdoms,Eastern Zhou Dynasty,Kim Binh Maietc.; also the person who contributed to the translationDu Fu's Poetryof Nhuong Tong to the public.
With his special contributions to the education cause, Associate Professor, Meritorious Service Le Duc Niem has been awarded noble awards by the Party and the State, the Ministry of Education and Training and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi such as: Third-class Labor Medal, Second-class Resistance Medal, Medal for the Cause of the Trade Union, Medal for the Cause of Education, Excellent Teacher, Commemorative Medal of VNU Hanoi, 50-year Party membership badge, etc.
Associate Professor Le Duc Niem is a simple and enthusiastic person. He is a representative of solidarity, humanitarian spirit, sense of responsibility, daring to think and act. During his decades of working at the Faculty, he has held many important positions such as: Head of the Department of Foreign Literature, Head of the Department of Oriental Literature, Secretary of the Trade Union of the Faculty of Literature, Vice Head of the Faculty of Literature - Acting Head of the Faculty of Literature, Secretary of the Party Cell, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Faculty of Literature, Member of the Executive Committee of the Party Committee of Hanoi National University... In any position, he always devoted himself to completing his tasks with all his pure soul, with a spirit of impartiality. He is a representative of the generation of veteran teachers, both participating in revolutionary activities and teaching and scientific research - a teacher rich in practical spirit. With a bright smile always on his lips, he is always loved by his friends, colleagues and respected by generations of students.
