We would like to respectfully introduce to readers the research work “The triangular relationship between Vietnam - Soviet Union - China in the resistance war against the US 1954-1975” by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Quang Minh, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. This work is the result of a National University-level research project chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Quang Minh, and is also the summary of the author's many years of teaching and research experience on Vietnam's foreign policy and international relations.
“Quan hệ tam giác Việt Nam - Liên Xô - Trung Quốc trong cuộc kháng chiến chống Mỹ 1954-1975”
“The triangular relationship between Vietnam - Soviet Union - China in the resistance war against America 1954-1975”

Research on the Resistance War against America in Vietnam in general is not a new topic. But the novelty of this work is the approach to research the issue from the perspective of international relations, especially the "trilateral" relationship between Vietnam - Soviet Union - China.

Inheriting the research results of predecessors, combined with rich and diverse sources of documents both at home and abroad, the author has succeeded in analyzing the movement of the triangular relationship between Vietnam and the two largest socialist countries, the Soviet Union and China, in the period from 1954 to 1975.

The book has a tight, scientific and logical structure of 8 chapters. In the first part, the author presents the theoretical basis of the strategic triangle relationship, its formation, characteristics and implications for the case of Vietnam. On that basis, the author analyzes in depth the basis for the formation of the Vietnam - Soviet Union - China triangular relationship, the process of movement as well as the results of these relationships through the stages of the war. Finally, the author comprehensively assesses the impact of the Vietnam - Soviet Union - China triangular relationship on the war situation, on each country, the region and the world. The lessons that the author draws after studying the Vietnam - Soviet Union - China triangular relationship in the resistance war against the US are still relevant today. That is, in foreign affairs, we must put national interests first, have an independent, autonomous, clever, proactive policy, and balance the relationship between major countries with the motto "responding to all changes with the constant".

“The novelty of the work is the research approach from the perspective of the “trilateral” relationship between Vietnam - Soviet Union - China” (Professor Vu Duong Ninh).

It can be said that the research work of Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Quang Minh has mentioned a very complicated but also very interesting issue. It is complicated because there is an interweaving, dependence and close relationship between the three subjects of Vietnam, the Soviet Union and China. It is interesting because each issue needs to be viewed and considered from different perspectives. The development of the Vietnam - Soviet Union - China triangle relationship during the resistance war against the US is a typical example of international politics during the Cold War. In that war, each country had its own goals, policies and methods to achieve its ultimate goal. All of these show the complexity of the Vietnam - Soviet Union - China triangle relationship. Thanks to its mettle and intelligence, its sober and clever handling, Vietnam was able to protect its national interests and bring the resistance war to success.

The research work of Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Quang Minh is even more meaningful when it was completed on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the end of the war to liberate the South and reunify the country (1975-2015).

With all these thoughts, I would like to respectfully introduce to readers this valuable research work.
