In commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the birth of the great President Ho Chi Minh and the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, on April 17th, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Linguistics, in collaboration with the Vietnam Linguistics Association, organized the 2010 National Linguistics Conference.With the theme "Linguistics and Languages in Vietnam," this scientific conference serves as a forum for linguists to present their latest research findings and discuss issues of interest in linguistics, Vietnamese linguistics, the languages and cultures of ethnic minorities in Vietnam, the Hanoi dialect, and the language of President Ho Chi Minh.

157 scientific papers were submitted, and nearly 200 delegates and researchers from Vietnam and abroad attended the Conference. At the plenary session, following the opening speech by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu (Vice Rector of the university, co-chair of the organizing committee) and the welcoming speech by Prof. Dr. Le Quang Thiem (President of the Vietnam Linguistics Association, co-chair of the organizing committee), the Conference heard and discussed three papers by scientists: -

From culture shock to linguistic interaction(Nguyen Van Chien, Thang Long University)
Through a survey of agricultural terms in Nghe Tinh, we reflect on the relationship between occupational terms and dialects and the national language.(Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Trong Canh, Vinh University), etc. Many reports by young lecturers and researchers who are postgraduate students or doctoral candidates at universities and research institutes were also presented at the Conference and were highly appreciated:

Comparing tones in Chinese and Vietnamese(Mong Lam, China University of Foreign Trade and Foreign Studies, PhD candidate of the Department of Linguistics), etc. Over the years, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and its Department of Linguistics have organized many national and international scientific conferences and seminars on linguistics and Vietnamese linguistics with high scientific quality, highly appreciated by experts such as: the 6th International Conference on "Inter-Asian Linguistics" (November 2004, in collaboration with the Institute of Linguistics), the Conference on "Linguistic Issues: Ho Chi Minh's Language - Hanoi Language with Vietnamese Language and Culture" (November 2007, in collaboration with the Hanoi Linguistics Association), the 2nd International Conference on "Research and Teaching of Vietnamese and Chinese Language and Culture in East Asia and Southeast Asia" (November 2009, in collaboration with Guangxi Nationalities University). In his concluding remarks at the Conference, Professor... Le Quang Thiem - President of the Vietnam Linguistics Association - highly appreciated the success of the 2010 National Linguistics Conference, especially its scientific quality, academic value, and practical value. He also thanked the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Linguistics for creating all the conditions for the conference's success.
