At the young age of 23, Nguyen Manh Tuong earned two French doctoral degrees (national doctorates – docteur d'État, not the newer doctorates – docteur nouveau that many people can achieve today); his achievements were so "brilliant" that they surprised even the French at the time.

Originally a science student with dreams of becoming a doctor, by chance and with a bit of daring, the once studious student has now become a leading expert in history, contributing many outstanding scientific works to the field of history in Vietnam. He is affectionately called "The Modern Historian of Vietnam" by his colleagues and is one of the figures honored at the 2015 "Glory of Vietnam" program of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor. Lao Dong Newspaper had a conversation with Professor, Doctor, and People's Teacher Nguyen Van Khanh (pictured) as this event approaches. USSH is republishing this interview.
