Southeast Asia today is the world's most dynamic economic region, with a population of over 650 million and a GDP exceeding US$2.6 trillion (2018). The World Economic Forum (WEF) forecasts that by 2020, the region will become the world's fifth-largest economy. Beyond its rich culture, history, and immense economic potential, Southeast Asia is increasingly becoming a united and cohesive entity, as evidenced by the formation of the ASEAN Community from late 2015 to the present. The importance and attractiveness of this region have spurred the establishment of numerous research and training centers for Southeast Asian studies around the world.
