In summary: Vietnamese novels at the beginning of the 21st century witnessed a bountiful harvest of authors in both quantity and quality of works, creating an extremely diverse picture of Vietnamese novels at the beginning of the 21st century with many different creative personalities, offering interpretations of many thorny issues of literary and social life in the 21st century.
Regarding the character types: Characters in Vietnamese novels of the early 21st century are diverse in type, vivid in life, and accurately reflect the stories of life, amidst the flow of reality, sometimes peaceful, sometimes turbulent.
The system of character types in Vietnamese novels at the beginning of the 21st century has been meticulously created by writers. These are character types that are very unusual compared to traditional conceptions. Characters are classified based on: i) their typological structure and ii) the narrative method of the genre.
Accordingly, there are different types of characters, including: 1) By typological structure: Anonymous characters; Symbolic characters; "psychologically disruptive" characters; 2) By genre structure: Historical characters; Existential characters; and Homosexual characters.
Regarding modes of expression: The modes of expression in constructing character types exhibit many unique and creative aspects, reflecting the talent and personality of each writer on their journey of innovation in writing and character portrayal. The main modes of expression in novel character development in the early 21st century include two main approaches: 1) Transitioning characters towards modernity and 2) Utilizing postmodern techniques. Both modes are intertwined in the works, meaning there are no clear boundaries between them. In the same work, authors can simultaneously use these interwoven methods to best shape their literary creations. This creates diversity and creativity in the choice of techniques for character expression by writers. Within the scope of this thesis, we choose to more clearly distinguish each mode to highlight the new aspects of artistic expression in Vietnamese novels of the early 21st century.
12. Future research directions: We will continue to pursue research on contemporary Vietnamese novels of the 21st century in subsequent periods, both to build upon current research results and to observe the significant changes in Vietnamese novels during this century.
