The Faculty of Literature is one of the largest and oldest faculties in the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Established in 1956, it has undergone several mergers and separations under different names such as the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Literature and History, the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature, and dozens of relocations during the resistance war against the US. To date, the Faculty of Literature has had a history of over 60 years of development and growth. Since October 1996, the Faculty of Literature has entered a new phase of development within the structure of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, a multidisciplinary, high-quality university center of the country during the period of reform.
As one of the oldest faculties in the Hanoi National University system, with a leading reputation in literary training and research, the Faculty of Literature has the mission of training high-quality human resources with solid knowledge, a democratic, scientific, and humanistic spirit in literature, art, and Sino-Vietnamese studies to serve the cause of national construction and renewal.
The educational philosophy of the Faculty of Literature is: Fundamental knowledge - Independent thinking - Proactive adaptation.
Key achievements
Over its more than 60 years of development, the Faculty of Literature has gradually established itself as one of the leading institutions nationwide in teaching and researching literature, with a comprehensive and high-quality system of textbooks, specialized books, monographs, and treatises.
Over the years, the Faculty of Literature has consistently received medals, certificates of merit, and commendations from various levels, such as the Third-Class Labor Medal in 1995 and the Second-Class Labor Medal in 2001. The Faculty of Literature has also been awarded 38 certificates of merit and 18 commendations from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, Hanoi University, and Vietnam National University, Hanoi. For many years, the Faculty has consistently been recognized as an outstanding collective labor unit of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
The Faculty has three departments that have been awarded Certificates of Merit by the Prime Minister: the Department of Literary Theory (2001), the Department of Modern Vietnamese Literature (2001), and the Department of Vietnamese Folk and Medieval Literature (2004). For many consecutive years, the departments within the Faculty have been awarded the title of Excellent Labor Collective and received Certificates of Merit from Hanoi National University.
The goal of the Faculty of Literature is to build an interdisciplinary faculty that encompasses the fields of culture, art, and classical linguistics, integrates into the international academic environment, and effectively serves the cause of industrialization and modernization of the country.
The Faculty's development orientation is to expand research and teaching areas; consolidate and modernize traditional fields; strengthen international activities, from international collaborations to international publications; develop several new disciplines and specializations; and build a multidisciplinary unit that combines research and training.
