In January 2023, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continued to recognize one key research center and four strong research groups of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-USSH) as strong research groups at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi level. This is a recognition and investment by VNU in the scientific and technological research activities of VNU-USSH - a leading university in training high-quality, highly skilled human resources.

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH), has the mission of leading the way in training high-quality, highly skilled human resources; researching, creating, and disseminating knowledge in social sciences and humanities, serving the cause of national construction and defense and international integration. Building and developing strong research groups is identified as both a method and a goal for VNU-USSH to develop its scientific and technological potential, enhance its ability to conduct cutting-edge research, and form scientific schools and centers of excellence. These research groups create momentum for increasing scientific and technological values ​​and competitive factors at both national and international levels, promoting the development of Faculties/Institutes/Centers of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-USSH, in a research-oriented manner.
With the strategic goal of conducting high-quality scientific research to serve the cause of national construction, development, and defense, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, has identified several priority research directions that are within the University's strengths and closely linked to Vietnam's development requirements regarding its historical, cultural, social traditions, country, and people; Vietnam's unique development model and path; Vietnam's role and position in regional and international relations; national sovereignty and security, with a focus on research concerning borders, islands, territorial processes, etc.
The key research centers and strong research groups of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, that continued to receive recognition in 2023 include:
1. Key Research Centers focusing on applied research for the period 2023 - 2028:Institute of Policy and Management
2. Strong Research Team:Vietnamese Politics, Rule of Law, and Religion
3. Strong Research Team:The Sea and Trade in Asia
4. Strong Research Group: Social Work and Social Security

A strong research group at Hanoi National University is defined as a research group capable of implementing national or international science and technology tasks, aiming for key national science and technology products, capable of guiding and leading the science and technology market through advanced research or science and technology products with significant impact in practice or science, and capable of serving as a cornerstone towards forming a school of research and training human resources as a science and technology organization within Hanoi National University.
Decision No. 3273/QD-DHQGHN on the promulgation of guidelines for the development and preferential treatment of strong research groups at Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The purpose of developing strong research groups is to (1) form key science and technology products bearing the brand of VNU, participating in solving urgent and important problems of society and the nation; (2) serve as a basis for investing in the development of key and cutting-edge scientific research directions; (3) contribute to the development of the innovation ecosystem, training high-quality human resources and implementing the current Science and Technology Strategy of VNU.
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities considers maintaining and continuously improving the quality of training, and developing a team of highly qualified scientific staff with a high level of autonomy and creativity in teaching and scientific research, as a central task and a "strategic solution" in its long-term development orientation.
Developing strong research groups contributes to achieving the strategic goals of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities towards becoming a research university, continuing to affirm its leading position in research and training in social sciences and humanities in Vietnam, striving to be among the top 150 universities in Asia by 2025, among the top 100 universities in the continent by 2035, and on par with advanced universities (among the top 500) in the world.
